To expedite his family’s citizenship, Huffman, a welder with no prior military experience, signed a contract with the Russian military. According to his wife, DeAnna, he was explicitly promised a non-combat role, such as a welder or a war correspondent, far from the fighting. That promise was quickly broken.

From Welder to Cannon Fodder

After just a few weeks of minimal training—conducted in a language he does not speak—Huffman was deployed near the front. “He feels like he’s being thrown to the wolves right now,” his wife said in a now-deleted social media video, pleading for prayers.

The family’s ordeal has been compounded by financial hardship. They have reportedly not received the promised signing bonus or pay, and Derek was even required to “donate” money for his own military supplies. Critical posts by DeAnna asking for help have been mysteriously removed from their social media channels.
