The head of Chicago’s teachers union recently compared resisting ICE to resisting slavery.
Stacy Davis Gates, the president of the Chicago Teachers Union, said labor leaders must “coalesce” around people who may be ICE targets while also fighting Trump administration actions in court.
“During enslavement, our country’s time of tyranny in that way, we had people who went to the courts … you had people who staged rebellions,” Gates said. “That was a period of the word ‘and.’ We are in a period of the word ‘and.’”
Gates made the comment while speaking at the Washington State Labor Council convention. She encouraged attendees to boo ICE because of the funding the agency receives.
The Chicago Teachers Union is part of the American Federation of Teachers, which is led by Randi Weingarten.
