Former Biden White House Chief of Staff Ronald Klain appeared on Capitol Hill Thursday for a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee as part of an expanding probe into whether senior aides concealed signs of President Joe Biden’s mental decline during his final months in office.
Klain, who served as Biden’s chief of staff from January 2021 to February 2023, arrived quietly and did not respond to questions from reporters before entering the secure interview room. His testimony is being taken voluntarily and transcribed, according to committee officials.
Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said Klain’s position at the “top of the organizational chart” made him a key witness in determining whether executive actions, including the signing of documents and pardons, were executed by autopen without Biden’s knowledge. “I think everyone in America is wondering whether or not Joe Biden was mentally fit to be President of the United States, especially during the last six months of his administration,” Comer told reporters.
Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) were also seen entering the interview, which is being led primarily by committee staff.
Klain is the sixth former Biden administration official to appear in the investigation, and the third to do so voluntarily. Others, including White House physician Kevin O’Connor and senior aides Annie Tomasini and Anthony Bernal, appeared under subpoena but invoked the Fifth Amendment.
The inquiry has also included testimony from ex-staff secretary Neera Tanden and longtime Biden aide Ashley Williams, whose sessions lasted more than four hours but reportedly provided limited new information.
Lawmakers are particularly interested in Klain’s role in preparing Biden for his widely criticized June 2024 debate performance against then-candidate Donald Trump, which fueled questions about Biden’s cognitive capacity.
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO), an Oversight Committee member, outlined some of the key questions investigators want answered: “Did you ever see a question of cognitive ability in the president? Were you aware that he was not making these decisions? Was he being led?”
Biden, in a recent interview with The New York Times, maintained that he “made every decision” during his time in office.
