DOJ Files Lawsuit Against NY Over Sanctuary Policies

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York and New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) over the Big Apple’s sanctuary policies that protect illegal immigrants from federal authorities.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit against Adams, as well as other leftist officials in the Empire State for enforcing sanctuary city policies that are at odds with the immigration agenda of the Trump administration.

The DOJ argued that such policies violate the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

“New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies,” Bondi said in a DOJ press release. “If New York City won’t stand up for the safety of its citizens, we will.”

“For too long, New York City has been at the vanguard of interfering with enforcing our immigration laws,” Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate said. “Its efforts to thwart federal immigration enforcement end now.”

As Breitbart News reported, the DOJ’s lawsuit addresses recent hectic events that occurred in New York City this week, including an instance where two illegal immigrants who were set free under a sanctuary policy adopted by the city ended up shooting a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in the face and leg during an attempted robbery.

“They allegedly tried to rob the officer, shooting him in the face and the leg in the process. Both aliens entered the United States illegally and were repeatedly arrested for criminal behavior since. In fact, after an April 5, 2024, arrest for fourth-degree felony grand larceny and petit larceny, ICE placed an immigration detainer on one of the aliens,” the lawsuit states.

“But the New York City Department of Correction ignored the detainer and released him back onto the streets of New York City, leaving him free to continue committing crimes. But for New York City’s sanctuary policies, this tragedy could have been avoided,” it continues.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reacted to the tragic incident, saying, “How many more lives will it take, how many more people have to be hurt and victimized before we have public safety be a number one priority in some of our largest cities?”

New York isn’t the only state that the DOJ has targeted over leftist-promoted sanctuary policies.

The department has filed lawsuits against the following states: California, Colorado, Illinois and Kentucky.

In testimony to the House Judiciary’s Immigration Subcommittee, the president of the National Immigration Center for Enforcement (NICE), RJ Hauman, revealed that 25,000 illegal immigrants were protected from federal enforcement because of sanctuary policies in liberal cities.

“The American people spoke loud and clear in November. It’s time for Congress to wake up, shift into Trump gear, and act decisively — end sanctuary cities for good and launch mass deportations now,” Hauman told the subcommittee, Breitbart News reported.

“Every day we delay, we roll the dice on the next preventable tragedy, the next innocent life lost to a criminal alien we could have sent packing,” he added.
