Columbia University has agreed to a massive settlement with the Trump administration after failing to protect Jewish students from harassment and violent pro-Hamas demonstrations, according to a report from the New York Post.
The settlement, finalized with the Department of Justice, requires Columbia to pay more than $220 million and submit to independent monitoring to ensure compliance with civil rights laws. The university will also be forced to adopt merit-based hiring and admissions policies while reversing what federal investigators called racially discriminatory practices.

“This is an unprecedented agreement,” a DOJ source said, adding that the terms are intended to hold the Ivy League school accountable for “egregious violations of Jewish students’ civil rights.”
The case stems from months of pro-Hamas activity on Columbia’s campus following the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel. Jewish students reported being harassed, threatened, and physically prevented from accessing campus spaces. The DOJ said the university failed to intervene despite repeated warnings.
Mahmoud Khalil refuses to condemn Hamas because he IS a terrorist sympathizer not because DHS ‘painted’ him as one. He ‘branded’ himself as antisemite through his own hateful behavior and rhetoric.

The settlement is expected to increase pressure on other elite universities, including Harvard, which is still fighting the Trump administration in court over similar allegations. The federal government has already revoked nearly $3 billion in Harvard’s grants as part of an ongoing civil rights investigation.
The situation at Columbia escalated further in April 2025 when janitorial staff filed a lawsuit against pro-terrorism rioters, alleging they were held hostage for hours during a violent takeover of Hamilton Hall. That lawsuit remains pending.

One of the alleged organizers of the Columbia protests, Syrian national Mahmoud Khalil, was seen on Capitol Hill this week meeting with Democratic lawmakers sympathetic to his cause. The Department of Homeland Security has initiated deportation proceedings against Khalil, while the State Department is moving to revoke his Green Card.
