Have these guys learned NOTHING from the last six months of the Trump Presidency?
For a country still in the process of negotiating Trump’s tariff targets, this is NOT a particularly smart strategy.
Remember way back when Trump first started announcing his tariff strategy? Even before he started using it to rebalance trade inequities, he told our neighbors in both Mexico and Canada that he was implementing a tariff specifically to make it clear that border security and fentanyl poisoning were issues America were now treating as priority national security issues.
In Canada’s case, there was concern that precursors were being brought over to Canada to feed Canada-based labs where these drugs were being made at scale, for export to the States.
Fast Forward Six Months…
On the American side of the border, CCP acts of aggression, infiltration, and subversion have been treated with great seriousness.
Dan Bongino, for example posted a few examples of these efforts on his social media:
An excerpt from a longer tweet:
-Since the beginning of 2025, we have arrested 51 foreign intelligence agents for activities including:
-SPYING on America
-STEALING our technology and financial policies through economic espionage and theft of trade secrets
-HARRASSING, STALKING and INTIMIDATING people living in our great country as part of transnational repression
-STEALING U.S. Government classified and national defense information that puts us ALL at risk
-PROLIFERATING export-controlled technology that is used by our adversaries to build better missiles, drones and bombs
-EVADING sanctions and helping our adversaries raise money to continue to harm our national security
-SMUGGLING biological pathogens that put our health and our agriculture at risk
-There’s a lot more work to be done. We have nearly 5,000 open counterintelligence investigations, including more than 800 new cases opened this year alone. We’re moving quickly to arrest or disrupt enemy agents, because we know this heightened global threat environment means we need to be hyper-vigilant in protecting our Homeland.
And a couple of screenshots from just this past month to show both drug trafficking and illicit foreign influence are being taken super-seriously:
Elsewhere, Congress and federal agencies are cracking down on areas where Biden was particularly lax, including many suspicious Chinese-controlled farmland near military installations.
Meanwhile, in Canada…
And what has Canada been doing to show their biggest trading partner they are treating fentanyl and malign CCP influence as a serious threat?
Like good little lefties, they are enthusiastic supporters of a catch-and-release criminal justice sustem.
Canadian prosecutors have quietly dropped charges against a Chinese scientist in Vancouver accused of importing more than 100 kilograms of a narcotics precursor, raising serious questions about her connections to Chinese academic programs and networks suspected of links to espionage, foreign interference, and transnational crime, The Bureau has learned.
The 57-year-old chemist, referred to here as Dr. X due to the unusual termination of the case, has documented affiliations with Chinese institutions flagged for military research and intelligence collaboration. According to filings from a bio-pharmaceutical company with ties to the University of British Columbia that hired her to lead large-scale cannabinoid extraction, Dr. X was reportedly working within Canadian universities under Beijing’s “Talents” plan—a recruitment initiative expanded under President Xi Jinping and described by U.S. intelligence as a platform for espionage and dual-use technology transfer.
British Columbia court records confirm that Dr. X, a graduate of Zhejiang University—an institution associated with China’s Ministry of State Security—was charged in June 2022 with importing and exporting a controlled substance. —The Bureau
On the political side, nothing has been done about a scandal that literally connected elected politicians (possibly from multiple parties) with foreign (and especially CCP) influence campaigns.
“The national security committee indicates there are members of this House that have knowingly worked for foreign hostile governments,” Poilievre said Wednesday. “Canadians have a right to know who and what is the information — who are they?”
The findings put pressure on Canada’s national police force to investigate potential criminal charges. The report also refuels debate on the ability of the federal government’s deterrence mechanisms to curb foreign interference in a country whose political and legal system is considered one of the highest-performing in the world.
The all-party NSICOP said Monday that it has reviewed intelligence that suggests “semi-witting or witting” parliamentarians have worked with foreign missions to mobilize voters during a political campaign; have taken cash “knowingly or through willful blindness” from foreign missions or their proxies; and have shared privileged information with foreign diplomatic officials. — Politico, 2024
Mark Carney himself — Trudeau’s successor from the same political party — has had his own past relationship with the CCP come into question.
The full story (here) gets deep into the weeds, but a couple of paragraphs should give a sense of the larger picture, with key phrases highlighted for the benefit of our readers.
Before reading the citation, it will help to know that JCCC is ‘Jiangsu Commerce Council of Canada—the Chinese Communist Party-linked business group at the center of a controversial meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney during his leadership campaign’.
That same group was busted by Canadian cops and intelligence agencies for illegal casinos, drug trafficking, weapons stockpiles, and money laundering.
The revelation deepens the controversy surrounding JCCC’s political access and linkages to figures investigated by Canadian police. During his campaign to become Prime Minister, Mark Carney denied meeting with JCCC leaders with links to Beijing’s United Front Work Department, after The Globe and Mail reported on the meeting.
The JCCC’s website was subsequently pulled offline. However, The Bureau published photographic and documentary evidence showing Carney did in fact attend a JCCC-sponsored event in Toronto—a high-level Chinese New Year reception involving key figures in the Liberal fundraising ecosystem. Among them were JCCC executives linked to a United Front PPE operation involving the same Markham riding boss photographed with Wei Wei at the January 2019 gathering at Wei’s lavish residence.[…] The gala also brought together leaders from the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations (CTCCO), a group founded in 1985 and described in The Globe and Mail as linked to Peter Yuen, Carney’s chosen candidate to replace MP Paul Chiang in Markham–Unionville. According to The Globe, CTCCO is led by an individual who “has close ties to the Chinese consulate and attended sessions of the Chinese People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Consultative Conference, a top advisory body to President Xi Jinping.” That individual, along with the CTCCO, was debanked by TD Bank, which cited internal documents showing the organization’s transactions were flagged as involving “individuals or entity(ies) identified by media, law enforcement and/or intelligence agencies as being linked to criminal activities,” The Globe reported.
Conclusion?
With next steps in the Canada/US trade negotiations hanging in the balance, they seem to be more interested in keeping China happy than they are in pleasing their biggest trading partner.
Something tells me that all the ‘elbows up’ tough guy posturing in the world isn’t going to save Carney from whatever number Trump decides to slap on Canadian goods coming across that border.
And unless our Canadian neighbo(u)rs start taking the CCP threat more seriously, that number might be a LOT bigger than Carney was expecting.
You might even call it ‘YUGE’.
