PHILADELPHIA, PA – Authorities have uncovered a complex nursing fraud scheme allegedly orchestrated by a woman using the name Shannon Wac. Investigators claim she operated under 20 different aliases and seven social security numbers to secure employment at nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities, despite lacking the necessary qualifications.
The investigation revealed that Wac allegedly stole the identities of legitimate nurses and even established a fake staffing agency to facilitate her deception. By doing so, she was able to transfer employment opportunities to herself, effectively bypassing standard hiring practices.
In Pennsylvania alone, Wac was reportedly dismissed from nine facilities after being accused of stealing medications, including Oxycodone. Her actions not only constituted fraud but also compromised patient care, according to officials.
The unraveling of Wac’s true identity began during a routine traffic stop when she provided three false names. It was only after fingerprinting that police confirmed her identity. Her vehicle contained patient records, drug paraphernalia, and equipment from various healthcare facilities. At the time of her arrest, she was wanted in four states on charges related to fraud and impersonating a nurse.
Authorities suspect that Wac initiated her scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploiting the urgent demand for healthcare workers. During this period, hospitals and care facilities were in dire need of staff, making them vulnerable to fraudulent activities.
The ongoing nursing shortage exacerbated by the pandemic remains a significant issue. Since 2022, approximately 140,000 nurses have left the workforce, and a recent survey indicates that 40% of those currently employed plan to leave within the next five years.
As healthcare facilities continue to face staffing challenges, the case underscores the importance of stringent hiring protocols to prevent similar fraudulent activities in the future.
