President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on the Justice Department to pursue legal action against Barack Obama, accusing the 44th president of orchestrating an intelligence assessment in 2016 that concluded Russia had interfered in the election to benefit Trump.
“After what they did to me, whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people. Obama has been caught directly,” Trump said during remarks in the Oval Office.
“If you look at those papers, they have them stone cold, and it was President Obama… the leader of the gang was President Obama, Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him?” he added.
Trump’s comments came while hosting Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at the White House. He insisted that accountability for Obama, who served from 2009 to 2017, should be a top priority for the Justice Department.
“It’s criminal at the highest level. It would be President Obama, he started it. And [Joe] Biden was there with him, and [then-FBI Director James] Comey was there, and [then-Director of National Intelligence] James Clapper — the whole group was there, and [then-CIA Director John] Brennan,” Trump asserted.
He went on to accuse Obama of treason, saying: “He’s guilty … This was treason, this was every word you could think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election.”
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently submitted a criminal referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi, suggesting that Obama may have committed a crime by initiating an intelligence review that ultimately implicated Russian efforts to aid Trump’s campaign.
The New York Post reports on a newly released email shared by Gabbard indicated that, following a December 9, 2016 meeting at the White House, an assistant to Clapper sent instructions to U.S. intelligence agencies to begin compiling a report “per the President’s request,” outlining the methods and actions Russia allegedly used to influence the election.
“Look, he’s guilty. It’s not a question,” Trump insisted when asked about Obama’s role.
“This is like proof, irrefutable proof that Obama was seditious, that Obama led, was trying to lead a coup — and it was with Hillary Clinton, with all these other people, but Obama headed it up.”
