A Kentucky man is behind bars after allegedly shooting someone simply for knocking on his front door — because it “bothered” him.
Michael Rodgers, 62, was arrested Sunday evening after police say he opened fire on an acquaintance who came to his Louisville apartment just before 5 p.m. The victim, who hasn’t been publicly identified, was shot in the leg and required emergency surgery after police applied a tourniquet at the scene.
According to arrest documents cited by The Louisville Herald, Rodgers admitted to the shooting, telling police he was angry about being woken up and that he “immediately” started blasting. After being read his Miranda rights, Rodgers reportedly said he “overreacted.”
The victim was unarmed and, according to police, did not pose any threat.
The bizarre shooting took place at Rodgers’ apartment on Westport Road. It’s still unclear what prompted the visit or if any words were exchanged before shots were fired. Police have not responded to media requests for further comment.
Rodgers appeared before a judge on Monday, where his request to lower bond was denied. The court cited “concern for others in the community” and set his bond at $100,000. He’s facing a charge of second-degree assault and is expected back in court on Wednesday.
Neighbors are still reeling from the incident, with one resident telling local reporters, “It’s terrifying to think a knock at the door could get you shot.”
