July 23, 2025, Fairfax, Va.—Americans for Limited Government Executive Director Robert Romano today issued the following statement praising the U.S.-Japan trade deal that finally allows U.S. exports of rice and cars to Japan:
“President Donald Trump has dramatically altered the U.S. trade relationship with Japan and is opening up its markets for U.S. goods for the first time, with Japan agreeing to take rice, cars, trucks and more and to pay the 15 percent baseline tariff. This will begin to narrow the $69 billion annual trade deficit with Japan. Only President Trump could have achieved this, and now he is giving tools that future presidents will be able to take advantage of should they choose the America First path, bolstering U.S producers and workers. For too long, U.S. trade partners have treated their relationship with America as a one-way street, where we accept imports but they take none, taking our good will for granted. The trade was never fair and reciprocal, and Japan was just another example, where hard-working Americans were subsidizing the growth of the Japanese economy without any benefit beyond stockpiling U.S. treasuries. Americans are not piggy banks for the rest of the world to take advantage of. If countries want good relations with America, they have to allow American exporters to trade, too. It’s fair and reciprocal or bust. Thank you, President Trump, for your vision in reshaping U.S. trade policy to be in America’s interests first.”
