Residents and workers in the neighborhood are expressing frustration and grief, particularly upon learning about the driver’s history. Many are questioning whether more stringent consequences for the earlier crash in April could have prevented this tragedy.
Surveillance footage obtained from the scene reveals the devastating impact of the crash, which authorities have described as too graphic to release publicly. The collision resulted in the deaths of Kevin Cruickshank, a passionate cyclist, and Mei Kwok, a 63-year-old woman who was resting on a bench.
The driver, identified as Autumn Donna Acn Seal Ramiro, was allegedly under the influence at the time of the crash. This incident has reignited concerns about Canal Street, labeled by transportation advocates as one of Manhattan’s most perilous roads. Since 2022, 18 people have been killed or severely injured there.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams responded to the tragedy, emphasizing the role of excessive speed in the incident. Both Ramiro and a passenger attempted to flee the scene but were quickly apprehended by police.
Ramiro’s involvement in a prior collision in Brooklyn, where she was charged with hitting a 22-year-old pedestrian, adds another layer of complexity to the case. The community is now calling for measures to prevent repeat offenders from endangering others on the road.
A spokesperson for Cruickshank’s family described him as a beloved figure in the neighborhood, known for his kindness and passion for cycling. His death has left a void in the community, particularly because he was engaged in an activity he cherished.
Following the incident, Ramiro was transported to Bellevue Hospital and now faces serious charges, including murder and manslaughter. Efforts to reach out to the victim of the previous Brooklyn incident were met with requests for privacy.
