A Texas man is behind bars after police discovered a decomposing body—believed to be his wife—inside his home, and authorities say his reaction was disturbingly casual.
Charles Byrd, 49, was arrested on Sunday, July 20, after a relative tipped off police, claiming Byrd admitted to hurting his wife, Angela Byrd, 44. When officers arrived at the San Antonio residence early that morning, they were hit with a horrifying scene: human remains wrapped in materials inside the home.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the body is likely Angela’s, though they’re awaiting official confirmation from the medical examiner regarding her identity, as well as the exact cause and manner of death.
Byrd wasn’t immediately found at the home. Authorities later tracked him down to a nearby residence, where he was allegedly hiding. Additional arrests were made at the scene, but details about those individuals haven’t been released.
Once in custody, Byrd allegedly confessed to killing his wife, telling detectives the two had a physical fight around June 16 that ended in her death. According to Salazar, Byrd then stayed in the house with her body for weeks, attempting to cover up the odor as it decomposed.
Perhaps most shocking was Byrd’s demeanor when speaking with investigators.
“He made a very flippant comment: ‘Go big or go home,’ like this was his first time committing a crime,” Salazar said. “I found that very, very shocking.”
Despite being escorted into custody, Byrd showed moments of apparent regret when speaking with reporters. “I’m so sorry. I loved my wife,” he told KSAT, adding that he had experienced a “mental break.”
Byrd has reportedly not requested an attorney. Investigators continue working to confirm the identity of the remains and build their case.
