Hunter Biden’s latest public remarks have sparked a wave of controversy after he appeared to confirm that President Joe Biden was given the prescription sleep aid Ambien ahead of his June 2024 debate performance.
The claim has intensified Republican-led investigations into the President’s mental and physical health, with lawmakers now demanding answers about potential unprescribed drug use and allegations of a coordinated cover-up by senior staff and the media.
In the interview, Hunter Biden said he had direct knowledge of the events leading up to his father’s widely criticized debate performance.
“I know what happened exactly in that debate,” Hunter said.
He explained that President Biden had endured an extensive travel schedule in the days prior, stating that the President had effectively “flown around the world three times.”
This exhaustion led aides to give the President Ambien so he could sleep before the debate, according to Hunter.
“He’s tired as s**t. They’d give him Ambien to be able to sleep. He gets up on stage, and he looks like he’s a deer in the headlights,” Hunter Biden said during the interview.
Ambien is a sedative-hypnotic drug prescribed to treat insomnia. It carries risks of dependency and side effects, especially with extended or improper use.
The FDA classifies Ambien as a controlled substance due to its potential for abuse.
It is currently unclear whether President Biden was ever officially prescribed the medication.
White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who has repeatedly issued public assessments affirming the President’s fitness for office, has not responded to the new claims.
No documentation has been made public indicating that President Biden was prescribed Ambien, leading critics to suggest that either Dr. O’Connor administered the drug without a formal prescription or that the medication’s use was deliberately concealed from the public.
Following Hunter’s revelation, conservative commentators and lawmakers quickly responded.
CNN analyst and former George W. Bush aide Scott Jennings asked on social media, “Not an insignificant question: how much Ambien was Joe Biden taking everyday as president?”
The allegations arrive as the House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), continues an investigation into what Republicans say is a pattern of deception by the Biden administration regarding the President’s cognitive and physical health.
Comer posted a video montage this week highlighting cable news hosts and Democratic politicians praising Biden’s sharpness just days before he announced he would not seek reelection.
“The Biden White House, Democrats, and their allies in the legacy media LIED. They insisted Joe Biden was ‘sharp’ and on top of his game. Now Democrats pretend the cover-up never happened,” Comer wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Trending Politics reported that Comer has suggested that more subpoenas are imminent, including for members of the Biden family who may have been involved in managing presidential responsibilities or in concealing the President’s health condition.
These subpoenas are expected to focus on whether family members or close aides played a role in decision-making or medication management in the final months of Biden’s campaign and presidency.
