SAN LEANDRO, CA – In a tragic incident late Thursday night, a woman was fatally shot while walking her dogs with her boyfriend in San Leandro, marking the second such occurrence in the city within a month. Police have stated that the two cases are unrelated, yet the community remains on edge due to their similarities.
Surveillance footage from a nearby bike shop captured the harrowing event. The video shows a gray vehicle approaching the couple as they crossed the street. Moments later, the woman collapses after being shot, while her boyfriend rushes to her side. The incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at the intersection of East 14th and William Street. Authorities reported that a suspect fired a single shot, striking the woman in the torso.
The woman was quickly transported to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Her boyfriend and the two dogs were unharmed, with the dogs later taken to a local shelter. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Residents, like Melanie Martinez who lives nearby, are deeply unsettled. “I left work just hours before it happened. It could have been anyone,” she said, expressing her shock and fear.
Police have arrested 21-year-old Rohith Sunil of San Jose in connection with the shooting. He was apprehended in Dublin, and authorities noted that his vehicle matched the description of the one seen fleeing the scene.
This incident follows a similar tragedy last month, where 47-year-old Ryan Christie was shot while walking his dog, just a mile away. Police have arrested a suspect in that case as well, though they maintain there is no connection between the two homicides.
Despite reassurances from law enforcement that no pattern has been identified, the community’s anxiety persists. Local resident Floyd shared his apprehension, stating, “I stay home as much as possible now.”
These violent incidents have left a lasting impact on the community. “I’ve lived here all my life, and it’s terrifying to think something like this can happen so close to home,” Martinez added, urging others to stay vigilant.
