The Department of Justice is undergoing sweeping personnel changes under President Donald Trump’s renewed administration, marking a significant reshaping of the federal legal system and fulfilling key elements of Trump’s longstanding pledge to “drain the swamp.”
According to The Hill, the DOJ has begun systematically removing career officials, with over 200 employees reportedly dismissed across multiple branches, including the FBI, immigration courts, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.
The firings appear to be focused on individuals tied to politically sensitive investigations and judicial functions that conflict with the administration’s priorities.
One of the highest-profile dismissals came last week, when Attorney General Pam Bondi removed Maurene Comey—daughter of former FBI Director James Comey—from her position as a federal prosecutor. Comey had previously worked on cases involving Jeffrey Epstein and served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Her removal coincides with new investigations reportedly launched into James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan, related to their roles in the now-discredited Trump-Russia collusion probe.
The DOJ also dismissed immigration court Judge Jennifer Peyton, who had led the Chicago immigration court system. The move is part of a broader restructuring of the Executive Office for Immigration Review, now under Bondi’s leadership, as the administration aims to realign the judiciary with stricter immigration enforcement policies.
In total, more than 20 immigration attorneys—many hired under the Biden administration to serve as pro-migration judges—were also fired in February. The Biden-era hires replaced Trump-appointed immigration judges in 2021, continuing a partisan cycle that has existed across multiple administrations. Now, with control firmly back under Trump’s DOJ, those roles are once again being reversed.
Earlier this year, Breitbart News reported that over a dozen prosecutors associated with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s cases against Trump were also removed. DOJ officials reportedly cited “lack of trust” in their ability to remain impartial.
In parallel, the State Department has also initiated a major reorganization, resulting in the dismissal of over 1,300 employees as part of a broader initiative to reduce redundancy and eliminate what the administration considers entrenched bureaucratic inefficiencies.
