President Donald Trump on Monday called for an end to cashless bail, saying the premise has allowed “the worst criminals” to be put back onto the street.
“Crime in American Cities started to significantly rise when they went to CASHLESS BAIL. The WORST criminals are flooding our streets and endangering even our great law enforcement officers. It is a complete disaster, and must be ended, IMMEDIATELY!” A local study out of Yolo County, California released in the wake of the pandemic found that 70 percent of suspects released on cashless bail went on to reoffend.
Those released on cashless bail were twice as likely to be rearrested for felonies, and three times as likely to be rearrested for violent crimes compared to their counterparts who were required to post bail, per CBS News. A third of those who had been released on cash bail were rearrested for domestic violence.
The Yolo County District Attorney’s office found that in the 13 months the county had a cashless bail, 420 of 595 people who were released on cashless bail had been rearrested.
