A Mexican national residing in Waukegan, Illinois, who had been unlawfully present in the country, was reported to have been arrested by federal immigration authorities following a disturbing discovery linked to the disappearance of a local woman.

The individual, identified as 52-year-old Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, had been charged in April with multiple offenses—including abuse and concealment of a corpse—after the body of 37-year-old Megan Bos was found on his property, according to details provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Despite the graphic nature of the allegations, a Lake County judge reportedly ordered Mendoza-Gonzalez’s release shortly after his initial court appearance. Local reports confirmed that the woman’s remains, which had been stored in a bleach-filled container, were located in Mendoza-Gonzalez’s yard, suggesting the body may have remained hidden for nearly two months.

Following public outcry and growing political concern, Mendoza-Gonzalez was said to have been taken back into custody on Saturday afternoon by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Chicago market. The suspect is now being held in ICE detention.

Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner pushed back strongly against the recently released legislation, singling out Illinois’ controversial SAFE-T Act, which has remained a focus of scrutiny. Gartner noted that the suspect, who was not a U.S. citizen, may have posed a high risk of fleeing, yet was still allowed to remain at large.

State Representative Tom Weber (R) also voiced alarm, questioning whether the severity of the case was being appropriately weighed under the new detention standards. Concerns were raised over the suspect’s actions following the alleged crime, including an apparent attempt to hide the body for an extended period and avoid emergency services.

Todd Lyons, ICE’s acting director, meantime, emphasized the organization’s continued efforts to enforce immigration laws despite opposition from so-called sanctuary areas. It was emphasized that removing anyone deemed a threat to public safety will remain the top priority for available resources. Regardless of criminal history, it was also declared that anyone found to be in the country illegally will continue to be subject to arrest.

According to Lyons, the inability to detain noncitizens already held in state or local facilities has forced federal agents into neighborhoods to carry out apprehensions that could have been avoided through proper cooperation.

The case has reignited debates over state-level criminal justice reforms, particularly those shielding criminal aliens from detention. DHS officials expressed outrage that such an individual had been allowed to remain free under existing policies, describing the situation as an egregious failure of the justice system.
