Stacey Abrams, the twice-defeated Georgia gubernatorial candidate, is again leaving the door open for a third attempt at the state’s highest office—and in doing so, is drawing fresh attention for claiming that true Christian values align with progressive political causes.
During an interview with NPR last week, Abrams said she hasn’t ruled out running for governor in 2026, though her current attention is focused on safeguarding the electoral process.
“I truly have not made any decisions and that is in part because there’s an urgency to 2025 that we cannot ignore,” she said, according to Fox News.
“My focus right now is on how do we ensure that we have free and fair elections in 2026? There’s a lot of hope being pinned on the ’26 midterms.”
Abrams, who previously led Democrats in the Georgia House of Representatives and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018 and 2022, has remained active in national politics.
In the interview, she highlighted how her religious upbringing shaped her political stance—especially on issues like immigration and LGBT rights.
“I cannot call myself a Christian and not believe that it is my responsibility to help the stranger, to help immigrants, to help the dispossessed,” Abrams stated.
“I cannot say that my faith justifies the venom that has been turned against the LGBTQIA community, the way we have demonized the transgender community.”
She went on to criticize those who selectively apply religious texts to justify political opinions.
“I cannot be a woman of faith who has read the Bible and just conveniently pick the passages I like,” she said.
Abrams linked her values to her family and early life.
“I watched my parents live those values that education matters, that faith matters, and that helping people matters,” she said. “And for me, those are the values that guide me, my faith first and foremost.”
Her remarks about Christianity and progressive causes sparked swift responses on social media platforms such as X, with users expressing a range of opinions.
One user commented, “You can be a good Christian or a good @theDemocrats… You can’t be both!”
Another wrote, “This woman musta been at the end of the line when God was handing out brains.”
Additional posts questioned her views on gender and abortion.
“Really? Like believing men can get pregnant, that gender is personal choice, not biological reality? Or aborting the unborn because their existence is inconvenient? Those values?” one user asked.
Other reactions referenced Abrams’s past political activities.
“This said by the woman who got federal grants to give appliances to the poor so they would be energy-efficient and ended up hardly doing anything with the money,” one user commented. “Where did that money go, Stacey? A real Christian would have used those funds as intended, taken very little salary and reported their spending appropriately. Right, Stacey!”
Another blunt comment stated, “What a joke. God is not in favor of killing babies and mutilating children.”
As Abrams considers her political future, the debate over how religious beliefs intersect with political ideology remains a point of contention among voters.
