PHOENIX, AZ – The relentless Arizona sun claimed another victim this year when 40-year-old Lloyd Ornelas succumbed to the oppressive heat after his car broke down on July 9. As temperatures soared to a scorching 118 degrees, Ornelas found himself stranded, a situation that quickly turned dire.
Ornelas, described by his family as a beacon of positivity, attempted to walk for help but collapsed from heat stroke along the roadside. His aunts, Monica McElroy and Sonia Pereira, recall him as a devoted father of three and a man who lived life with an open heart, always brightening the days of those around him.
“Lloyd was always there for everyone,” said McElroy. “He loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.”
Despite the best efforts of medical staff at Banner University Medical Center, where Ornelas was taken after going into cardiac arrest, his condition worsened, and he passed away several days later. His family sees his untimely death as a tragic reminder of the severe dangers posed by extreme heat.
This year alone, Maricopa County has confirmed nine heat-related deaths, with an additional 275 cases under investigation. Last year, the county reported over 600 fatalities linked to the extreme temperatures that plague the region.
Ornelas’ family hopes to use his story to raise awareness about the lethality of heat stroke. “If Lloyd’s story can save even one life, it would be a testament to how he lived his life,” Pereira said.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses, reflecting the community’s desire to support a family devastated by this sudden loss. Those wishing to contribute can find more information on local news websites.
The investigation into Ornelas’ death remains ongoing, but his family is determined to ensure his legacy of love and kindness continues to make an impact.
As temperatures remain high, the family urges everyone to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
