With the new NFL season soon set to kick off, President Donald J. Trump called for the team in the nation’s capital to have its longtime nickname restored after it was stripped during the “woke” cultural revolution.
On Sunday, the president took to Truth Social to call for the team’s owners to bring back the Washington Redskins, which the historic franchise had been called since 1933 when it was still in Boston prior to being relocated.
The name change took effect in 2020 amidst the societal upheaval that erupted after the tragic death of fentanyl-addicted thug George Floyd because leftists insisted that it was racist. The team was temporarily known as the Washington Football Team until it was formally renamed as the Washington Commanders in 2022.

He’s 100% right! Just like with our military bases, this is a shameful legacy of peak woke and should be corrected immediately. pic.twitter.com/BDZ7djufeQ

“The Washington ‘Whatever’s’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this,” Trump wrote, also urging the owners of the Cleveland Guardians to change the MLB team’s name back to the Cleveland Indians. “Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past.”
“Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!” Trump added.
The Indians and beloved team mascot Chief Wahoo got the tomahawk chop in 2022.
In another Sunday post, Trump seemed to suggest that if the Redskins aren’t brought back, there would be a price to pay.

He says he won’t make a deal for the team to build a new stadium if they don’t change their name back to the Washington Redskins.

“My statement on the Washington Redskins has totally blown up, but only in a very positive way,” Trump wrote. “I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins,’ and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders,’ I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington. The Team would be much more valuable, and the Deal would be more exciting for everyone.”
Back in 2020, before the teams were scalped by the social justice warriors, the president defended the two nicknames.
They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct. Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!

“They name teams out of STRENGTH, not weakness, but now the Washington Redskins & Cleveland Indians, two fabled sports franchises, look like they are going to be changing their names in order to be politically correct. Indians, like Elizabeth Warren, must be very angry right now!” Trump wrote in a post to the then-Twitter, since renamed as X.
Washington owner Josh Harris suggested that the team’s current nickname is here to stay in a recent interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier.
“The Commanders’ name actually has taken on an amazing kind of element in our building,” he said, responding to a question on the traditional name being restored as part of the team’s new stadium deal. “So, the people that certain types of players that are tough, that love football, are delegated Commanders, and Jayden [Daniels], for example, is a Commander, and they’re ranked.”
“And, you know, the business staff has gotten into it, and obviously, we’re in a military city here. There’s more military personnel than anywhere else, so we’re kind of moving forward with the Commanders’ name, excited about that, and not looking back,” the NFL owner added.
Cleveland ownership also seems to be dug in after caving to pressure to sever ties to its glorious past.
“But I would say generally, I understand that there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago,” Guardians President Chris Antonetti said. “Obviously, it’s a decision we’ve made and we’ve gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future.”
“I can tell you that I spoke to people of Indian heritage who love that name and love that team, and I think it’s a much superior name to what they have right now and it had heritage behind it, it had something special,” Trump said of the Redskins team name earlier this year.
“I am thrilled to announce that the Washington Football Team will be returning to our Nation’s Capital! The new Stadium Deal is a HUGE WIN for Washington, D.C., and for the Team’s incredible fan base,” Trump said in an April post to Truth Social.
