Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman and his wife Francie Frane are mourning the loss of Francie’s 13-year-old grandson, Anthony Zecca, after a tragic shooting incident in Naples, Florida.
Authorities confirmed that Anthony was accidentally shot and killed by his own father, Gregory Zecca, 38, inside the family’s apartment.
Gregory is Francie’s son from a previous marriage, making Anthony the step-grandson of the 72-year-old reality TV personality.
The shooting took place around 8 p.m. ET, according to law enforcement sources.
Officers responded to an emergency call reporting the incident, and the case is currently being investigated.
No arrests have been made, and police have categorized the shooting as an “isolated incident.”
Gregory Zecca, who is reportedly a member of Duane Chapman’s bounty hunting team, has publicly shared his enthusiasm for firearms.
In a 2021 social media post, he proudly displayed images of himself and Anthony at a gun range, captioning the post with “getting some range time in.”
While details of the shooting have not been released by the Naples Police Department, officials have not indicated foul play and have continued to treat the incident as accidental in nature.
In a joint statement, Duane and Francie addressed the heartbreaking loss, saying, “We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony.”
The couple has not issued further public statements since confirming Anthony’s death.
As of this writing, media outlets, including the Daily Mail, have reached out for additional comment but have not received responses from representatives for Chapman.
Anthony Zecca had previously spent time living with his grandparents during the summer of 2023.
During that visit, he accompanied Francie to the emergency room after she sustained an ankle injury.
While waiting with Duane in the hospital lobby, Anthony described a moment he attributed to a spiritual experience.
He felt a blast of cold air despite the warm, rainy weather and closed doors, according to Anthony.
“When we’re walking to her room I feel the wind again but from a different direction. When it first came, it hit me [on my chest]. But when it came again, it hit me from the back,” he recounted.
The boy later asked his grandmother about the phenomenon, and she responded, “It was the Holy Spirit.”
Francie, who had been in pain at the time of the injury, later reported that her ankle no longer hurt and that doctors determined it was not broken.
Anthony, described by family as a Christian and joyful child, also enjoyed dancing to Usher and attending local Comic Con events.
He was known for dressing up and posing with characters such as Predator, reflecting a creative and spirited personality.
Duane Chapman rose to national fame through his reality television series Dog the Bounty Hunter, which followed his work as a bail bondsman and bounty hunter.
The show aired from 2004 to 2012 and helped popularize bounty hunting as a televised profession.
Duane and Francie began dating in 2020 after connecting through shared grief. Francie lost her husband Bob Frane in 2018, while Duane’s fifth wife, Beth Smith, passed away in 2019 from stage II throat cancer.
Their relationship quickly became public as they supported one another through loss.
“We understood the pain that the other one was feeling, and [in] those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up,” Francie shared in a 2020 interview.
“We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak, and it brought us together in this amazing way.”
The couple married in 2021 and will mark their fourth wedding anniversary on Sept. 2. They remain active in both public appearances and charitable work.
On Nov. 15, Duane and Francie are scheduled to host the 3rd Annual F.U.S.E. Restored Gala in Cape Coral, Florida.
The event, which raises awareness and funds for human trafficking prevention, will take place at The Westin of Cape Coral at Marina Village.
The gala will feature an old Hollywood glam theme and is one of several initiatives the couple supports through their foundation.
The F.U.S.E. Foundation—short for Families United Serving and Empowering—was established by the couple to promote healing, faith and justice for families affected by crime and trafficking.
