A storm of backlash has erupted within former President Donald Trump’s political base following his recent dismissal of the Jeffrey Epstein files as a “Democrat hoax.”
The remark has ignited outrage among MAGA supporters who have long demanded justice for victims of Epstein’s child trafficking network and transparency regarding elite involvement.
Conservative commentator, author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza appeared alongside host Elijah Schaffer to discuss the controversy during an exclusive interview with Rift TV.
D’Souza offered explanations for Trump’s stance, calling it a strategic decision grounded in caution, not betrayal.
“Trump seems to be saying that there was some tampering with the files under the Democratic aegis. They’ve had four years to do it. They’re not above doing it. In fact, there’s specialists in doing it,” D’Souza said.
“Trump seems to be making the prudential judgment that at the end of the day – this is not something that he wants to release.”
Elijah Schaffer, known for advocating the exposure of Epstein’s network, directly challenged D’Souza on whether Trump’s actions serve the American people or protect powerful elites.
He questioned why supporters were now being criticized for wanting answers they were once encouraged to seek.
“I can’t help but feel that a lot of people like yourself, included, are playing the long game here,” Schaffer said.
“Could you convince people like me that… after he went out and Pam Bondi said that the Epstein files were on her desk, and that suddenly now we should be like, ‘Well, if we want answers, we’re stupid’? It feels like a smack in the face.”
D’Souza defended the president’s judgment by pointing to the structure of representative democracy.
“We elect people and we put them into positions of power, mainly because we trust their judgment on a lot of issues,” he said.
“There’s something in [the files], or not in them, or about them, and we make a decision that we don’t want to release these files, and we don’t want to give the reason why we’re not doing it.”
Frustration within the MAGA movement has built over several years, centered on perceived inaction against elite corruption.
In 2016, the WikiLeaks release of DNC emails referenced occult practices and alleged coded language linked to child trafficking, sparking the widely circulated “Pizzagate” theory.
Despite widespread interest, no formal investigation was launched into those claims.
Many Trump supporters draw comparisons between that lack of action and the current secrecy surrounding the Epstein files, per Rift News reporting.
At the same time, many Americans have faced harsh consequences for political protests or activism.
Parents speaking out against COVID mandates or opposing drag queen story hour events have come under federal scrutiny.
Dozens of January 6 riot participants have received long prison sentences. Yet, high-profile names linked to Epstein remain largely untouched by law enforcement.
Many Trump supporters who have remained loyal over the years now feel disappointed and insulted.
Their demand for answers has been brushed aside, and being labeled “stupid” for pressing the issue has intensified tensions.
D’Souza, a longtime conservative voice and critic of federal overreach, explained that there could be legal and political risks in releasing the files without proper vetting.
He raised the possibility that the content of the Epstein documents may have been altered.
“For example, the Democrats or Comey or those guys added Trump’s name to the file… It wasn’t in the file before, but it’s in there now,” he said.
“You’ve got all these people who are associated with Epstein… but there is a menagerie of consent decrees, court orders, confidentiality agreements, attorney-client privilege—all this nest of constraints.”
He said the documents could contain a mix of names—some innocent, some guilty—and releasing them without context could be dangerous.
D’Souza referenced claims by attorney Alan Dershowitz, who has publicly stated that false names have been included in the lists.
“So Trump goes, ‘Listen, I may have a kind of random list, but I’m not going to just release the list where it’s got guilty and not guilty people mixed in together and let the American people sort it out,’” D’Souza said.
He also addressed concerns that Trump’s hesitation might be politically motivated or designed to shield donors or foreign interests.
Schaffer pointed to speculation that Epstein’s operation may have been connected to Israeli intelligence services.
“There’s overwhelming evidence, in my personal experience, that Epstein is related to somewhat Israeli intelligence,” Schaffer said.
“Why wouldn’t he just come out and say, ‘Israel’s not involved. This has nothing to do with Mossad’?”
Schaffer accused Trump of alienating loyal supporters, citing personal sacrifices made by many within the MAGA movement.
“I take offense to that, considering my producer… was facing five years in prison for defending him on January 6,” Schaffer said.
D’Souza rejected the idea that Trump is controlled by outside forces and emphasized the personal cost Trump has paid to continue leading the movement.
He pointed to Trump’s legal battles, over 90 felony charges, and a recent attempt on his life.
“He thinks, ‘I put myself on the line unlike anybody else… These people would have destroyed me. They tried to assassinate me,’” D’Souza said.
“So hasn’t this earned me at least a modicum of respect, where people can say… I’m going to give this guy a little bit of rope?”
D’Souza also dismissed claims that a small foreign country could manipulate American political outcomes.
“It’s the idea that a country of 10 million people can manipulate a country of 350 million people. It makes no sense,” he said.
Despite the controversy, D’Souza urged unity within the movement and warned against abandoning the broader goals of MAGA over a single disagreement.
“Are we willing on this issue to sort of break with Trump? Are we willing to give up the gains of MAGA and basically bring the MAGA transformation to a grinding halt?” he asked.
