Democratic strategist James Carville says his party is a mess — and barreling toward disaster.
In a blistering New York Times essay, Carville slammed Democrats as “constipated, leaderless, confused,” and even a “cracked-out clown car.” He says the party is on track for a “civilized civil war.”
Carville pointed to far-left candidates like New York City’s Zohran Mamdani as a sign of deep division. Mamdani supports state-run grocery stores and new taxes on the top 1% — policies Carville fears could actually pass.
The strategist says Democrats are split by both age and ideology. Older voters are skeptical of big promises. Younger progressives want sweeping economic changes now.
He also called out growing tensions over Israel, saying the party is “at odds” with itself on foreign policy. From healthcare debates to economic priorities, the infighting is only growing.
Carville urged Democrats to unite around one message: repeal President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” He blasted Trump’s Medicaid work requirements and cuts to food stamps, student aid, and more.
He also slammed the bill’s $1 trillion military spending increase, saying it undercuts Democratic values. “We must demand a repeal,” Carville said.
The party may be fractured, but Carville insists there’s one thing they can all rally around — fighting Trump’s agenda. “Onward to the midterms,” he wrote.
