Since taking the reins at the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has had to navigate a series of controversies and personnel concerns, and those struggles show no signs of abating.
As the Daily Mail reports, last week saw the departure of another notable figure at the Trump DoD, though the precise circumstances surrounding the situation remain the subject of some debate.
Fulcher out at Pentagon
According to CBS News, Justin Fulcher, a senior staff member at the Pentagon, has been ousted in the latest seemingly unexpected upheaval among Hegseth’s top aides.
Fulcher, the outlet explains, began work at the DoD as part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), previously led by billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk.
Later, he was promoted to a role within Hegseth’s senior staff, working alongside Marine Col. Ricky Buria, Patrick Weaver, and Sean Parnel in a group built in the wake of the so-called “Signal scandal” in which a planned attack on Houthis in Yemen was discussed on a messaging app to controversial effect.
In a statement to CBS News over the weekend, Parnell painted Fulcher’s departure in a positive light, saying, “The Department of Defense is grateful to Justin Fulcher for his work on behalf of President Trump and Secretary Hegseth. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
A statement from Fulcher himself was also released by the Pentagon, saying, “As planned, I’ve completed 6 months of service in government to my country. Working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Department of Defense has been incredibly inspiring,” and in it, he also praised both Hegseth and Trump.
Controversies, conflicts abound
Despite the mutual claims of an amicable split, Fulcher’s time at the Pentagon was not without controversy, as the Mail noted.
Fulcher’s exit comes close on the heels of a Washington Post report detailing what was described as a tension-filled meeting in which he engaged with Yinon Weiss, the DOGE team lead at the Pentagon
Just last month, another report suggested that Fulcher told Hegseth’s lawyer that he had information that could pinpoint the source of classified materials leaks that occurred early in the secretary’s tenure.
Sources suggested that Fulcher said he would only pass the information along if he was tapped to run a subsequent probe of the alleged leakers.
In the end, officials were said to have deemed Fulcher’s claims of inside knowledge to be meritless, though Fulcher denied ever having made them to begin with.
Nebulous departures, continued skepticism
The continued personnel challenges and controversial departures from the Pentagon under Hegseth’s leadership have caused some to doubt his ability to lead such a massive government agency.
Whether things will begin to stabilize at the Department of Defense in the coming weeks and months is something that remains to be seen, with Hegseth’s future in the role arguably in the balance.
