A firestorm erupted last week when the Wall Street Journal published a report claiming that decades ago, Donald Trump sent a bawdy birthday greeting to disgraced pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, prompting the president to almost immediately file a lawsuit against the outlet.
However, sources now suggest that former President Bill Clinton also contributed to the birthday wishes collected for Epstein, dispatching what was described as a “warm and gushing” letter, as The Daily Mail reports.
Alleged Birthday Letter
According to the Mail, several hundred expressions of good cheer were collected ahead of Epstein’s 50th birthday, and they were ultimately compiled in a “leather-bound, gold-embossed album” by his longtime partner, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Clinton is now known to have been among the well-wishers, sending a letter on stationery that read, “From the desk of William Jefferson Clinton.”
The source who spoke to the Mail on the topic indicated that Maxwell solicited greetings from “everyone they knew and that included presidents, princes, and kings.”
The insider added, “Bill Clinton wrote a warm and gushing letter. It was one page and profuse in its admiration for Jeffrey.”
The current location of the book is said to be unknown, though it may have been seized during one of multiple raids on Epstein’s properties.
WSJ story prompts lawsuit
The story in the Wall Street Journal, published last week, detailed what was alleged to be Trump’s contribution to the birthday book.
According to the paper, Trump’s letter included a hand-drawn image of a naked female, a typewritten message, and an imaginary conversation, which Trump supposedly ended by writing, “may every day be another wonderful secret.”
As the New York Post reports, Trump almost immediately declared the story to be false, denied having authored the letter, and announced plans to sue the Wall Street Journal and the leaders, journalists, and publishers behind the piece.
Trump’s complaint, filed on Friday in Florida, seeks $10 billion in damages and asserts that “no authentic letter or drawing exists” that reveals Trump using “salacious language” to wish Epstein a happy birthday.
The lawsuit goes on to state, “Defendants concocted this story to malign President Trump’s character and integrity and deceptively portray him in a false light.”
Equal scrutiny?
Considering Trump’s recent successes in extracting massive settlements from other major media outlets caught in acts of bias or inaccuracy, it seems that the Wall Street Journal had better have airtight confidence in its published piece if it is to survive the legal onslaught coming its way.
The entire scenario also begs the question of why the outlet seemed to lack a similar degree of curiosity about Clinton’s birthday greeting to Epstein, particularly given his long history of rumored links to the disgraced billionaire and his debauchery.
