ALBUQUERQUE, NM – UFC Hall of Famer Diego Sanchez found himself in legal trouble after allegedly firing a gun from a moving vehicle on Interstate 40. The incident occurred Thursday evening as Sanchez was being driven across town by a friend.
According to Albuquerque police, the 41-year-old mixed martial artist was in the passenger seat when he rolled down the window and began shooting, declaring his love for the city. The sudden outburst left his friend, Derrick Montoya, in shock.
Montoya, who has known Sanchez for nearly two decades, said he was caught completely off guard by the fighter’s actions. “I had no idea he had a gun,” Montoya recounted, adding that Sanchez’s behavior was uncharacteristic and a sign he might need help.
The incident unfolded near a traffic accident on I-40 and University. Officers directing traffic at the scene heard gunshots and quickly stopped the vehicle. Court documents revealed a shell casing was found on the passenger side.
While Montoya was detained at the scene, he was later released without charges. Sanchez, however, faces charges of shooting from a vehicle and negligent use of a deadly weapon. He appeared in court on Friday, where a judge decided he would remain in custody without bond.
Montoya, who credits Sanchez for helping him start his barber shop, expressed concern for his friend’s well-being. He hopes this incident serves as a wake-up call, noting that Sanchez has been struggling recently.
In court, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the charges, leaving Sanchez in jail as the case proceeds. Montoya insists that despite the incident, Sanchez is not a harmful person but is in need of assistance.
The Albuquerque community remains stunned by the news, as the fighter’s actions appear to be out of character for the beloved local figure.
