Florida crushes the competition in religious liberty rankings

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had some fantastic news to share with the American people this week.

The First Liberty Institute’s Center for Religion, Culture & Democracy released their fourth annual Religious Liberty in the States Index.

And Florida didn’t just make the list – they crushed the competition by landing in the number one spot.

DeSantis announced the incredible achievement at New College of Florida on Monday, and you could practically hear the collective screaming from woke leftists across the country.

“Florida holds several #1 rankings, leading the nation in education, economy, and tourism—and now, Florida is #1 in religious liberty,” DeSantis declared.¹

The governor made it crystal clear that religious liberty is “critical to the foundation and function of America,” and he’s “proud that Florida excels in protecting this right.”²

This wasn’t some participation trophy either.

The Religious Liberty in the States Index is the only comprehensive comparison of how all 50 states protect religious liberty through law, according to the press release.³

Montana came in second place, followed by Illinois in third.

But Florida’s dominance wasn’t an accident – it was the result of years of deliberate policy-making that put religious freedom front and center.

DeSantis built a fortress of faith-based protections

While other states were bending the knee to the woke mob, DeSantis was busy building an impenetrable fortress of religious liberty protections.

The index evaluated 47 distinct legal protections, grouped into 20 different safeguards, that states can adopt to support religious freedom in daily life.⁴

These categories covered everything from medical conscience rights to protections for counselors, financial non-discrimination based on religion, and laws safeguarding parental rights.

Student religious expression and foster parent conscience rights were also included in the evaluation.

DeSantis didn’t just talk about protecting religious freedom – he actually delivered real results.

In 2021, he signed historic legislation to protect parental rights in education through the Parents’ Bill of Rights.⁵

This groundbreaking law explicitly gives parents the right to direct their child’s moral and religious upbringing and allows them to object to instructional materials that violate their religious beliefs.

The same year, DeSantis required teachers in Florida public schools to set aside 1 to 2 minutes daily for a moment of silence, giving students time for prayer or other religious observance.⁶

That’s exactly the kind of common-sense policy that drives the radical Left absolutely crazy.

Florida protected houses of worship when others shut them down

Remember when Democrat governors across the country were shutting down churches while keeping strip clubs and abortion clinics open during the pandemic?

DeSantis took a completely different approach.

In 2022, he signed legislation to protect houses of worship, deeming them as essential and making it so that no emergency order could directly or indirectly prohibit religious institutions from conducting regular services or activities.⁷

While other states were trampling on the First Amendment, Florida was standing up for it.

DeSantis also signed the strongest legislation in the nation for medical freedom in 2023.

This was a game-changer for Floridians who’d been pushed around by mask mandates and vaccine requirements.⁸

No business, school, or government entity could force anyone to get tested, wear a mask, or get the COVID shot against their will.

Finally, healthcare providers had legal protection to stand up for what they believed in.

School choice and religious education expanded under DeSantis

The governor didn’t stop there.

In 2023, DeSantis signed legislation to expand school choice programs to allow students in Florida to attend whatever school best fits their needs – including religious private schools.⁹

He also protected the right of sports teams to provide opening remarks, including prayers, before high school athletic contests.¹⁰

While woke school boards in other states were banning prayer and attacking religious expression, Florida was doing the exact opposite.

In 2024, DeSantis ensured order was kept on Florida’s university and college campuses and protected Jewish students from religious-based harassment when pro-Hamas protesters tried to set up encampments.¹¹

While other states allowed their college campuses to be vandalized and taken over by antisemitic agitators, Florida held the line.

The governor also pushed through HB 931, which brought chaplains into public schools as volunteers who could counsel students.¹²

Talk about putting faith back where it belongs.

DeSantis keeps racking up the wins

The religious liberty crown is just another trophy for DeSantis’s growing collection.

Florida’s been crushing it across the board – they’ve got the best economy in America according to U.S. News & World Report and CNBC.¹³

That’s three years running for CNBC’s top spot.

The state’s been dominating higher education rankings for nine straight years, and they’re number one in education freedom too.¹⁴

People are flooding into Florida faster than anywhere else in the country, and it’s not hard to see why.¹⁵

Four of the top 10 fastest-growing metro areas are right there in the Sunshine State.

Retirees love it, tourists can’t get enough of it, and businesses are setting up shop left and right.¹⁶

Wall Street trusts Florida so much they’ve given the state perfect credit ratings from all three major agencies.¹⁷

Try finding that kind of financial confidence in New York or California.

This is what real leadership looks like

DeSantis didn’t mince words about what this ranking really means.

“If one examines the origins of our country, religious freedom was essentially the first freedom that the Founding Fathers sought to protect,” the governor stated. “It is a central part of the American experiment and of our way of life.”¹⁸

The governor made it clear that “Florida will continue to be a role model for other states” when it comes to protecting religious liberty.¹⁹

This ranking proves that conservative governance works.

While Democrat-controlled states continue to attack religious freedom and embrace woke ideology, Florida is showing the rest of America what’s possible when you actually fight for traditional values.

The radical Left can scream and cry all they want, but the results speak for themselves.

Florida isn’t just winning – they’re dominating in every category that matters to hardworking Americans.

And that’s exactly why the woke mob is so furious about this latest ranking.

They know that DeSantis has created a blueprint for success that other Republican governors can follow.

The religious liberty index is just the latest proof that Florida is leading the charge in the fight to preserve America’s founding principles.
