July 18, 2025, Manhattan, New York – A Queens high school student has been reunited with his family at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan after spending over a month in federal immigration detention.
17-year-old Derlis Chusin, originally from Ecuador, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on June 4 during an asylum hearing at a Manhattan immigration court. He had been finishing 11th grade in Queens at the time of his arrest.
“He was in a detention facility as a teenager with adults in his bunk,” said NYLAG attorney Lauren Rave. “He had limited food options, limited access to us. It’s essentially being in prison.”
Chusin had entered the U.S. legally to seek asylum. According to his attorney Melissa Chua, he was detained without notice and separated from his family immediately after appearing in court.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed his arrest and stated that he was placed in expedited removal under current immigration policy. He was released on bond as his asylum case proceeds.
