Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi executed a dramatic reversal Thursday regarding the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein document controversy.
The California Democrat initially dismissed the matter as a “distraction” before demanding transparency just one hour later.
During an MSNBC interview with Chris Jansing, Pelosi expressed frustration when asked about President Trump’s approach to the Epstein case.
The former speaker argued that Americans should focus on congressional budget negotiations rather than the document release debate.
“This is a distraction,” Pelosi stated during the television appearance.
She emphasized that Congress had “major issues right here with things we’re voting on today” instead of focusing on the Epstein matter.
The longtime Democratic leader suggested that Trump’s supporters should handle the issue themselves.
“I’ll leave it up to them to talk it out,” she declared, distancing herself from the controversy.
Pelosi expanded her criticism to include Trump’s Alcatraz prison renovation proposal.
She grouped both the Epstein files and the prison project as diversions from more pressing legislative matters.
“Whether it’s Jeffrey Epstein or Alcatraz, it’s all off the subject of what they’re doing with this budget that is harmful to the kitchen table, meeting the kitchen-table needs of the American people,” the former speaker argued.
When pressed for clarification, Pelosi maintained her position that both issues served as distractions.
She characterized them as departures from addressing America’s fundamental challenges.
The California representative criticized the administration’s fiscal approach during the interview.
She accused Trump of “placing huge, trillions of dollars of national debt on future generations to carry forward at the expense of the health, nutrition and education of the American people.”
Pelosi argued that these policy discussions were “changing the character and the culture of America by undermining” essential services for families. However, within an hour of her television appearance, Pelosi’s stance shifted completely.
She took to social media platform X to demand action on the Epstein case.
“For reasons known only to him, Donald Trump is now refusing to appoint a special prosecutor in the Epstein case after weeks of refusing to release the Epstein files,” Pelosi wrote in her post.
The former Speaker highlighted partisan divisions on the issue in Congress.
“This week, House Democrats voted unanimously to release the files. Republicans voted to keep them hidden,” she claimed.
Pelosi’s social media statement emphasized accountability for all individuals connected to the case. “With deep respect for the victims, their trauma and their privacy, everyone on the Epstein list must be held accountable no matter who they are.”
Her post concluded with a clear demand: “Release the files.”
This marked a complete departure from her earlier characterization of the issue as a distraction.
The New York Post reported that a spokesperson for Pelosi did not provide comment when contacted about the apparent contradiction in her positions throughout the day.
The controversy gained additional momentum when Trump announced new action on the matter.
The president directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue the release of grand jury testimony from Epstein’s federal case.
Trump’s directive specifically targets materials from the Southern District of New York related to Epstein’s child sex trafficking prosecution.
This announcement came after Pelosi’s public reversal on the issue.
The case involves the convicted sex offender who died in federal custody while awaiting trial.
The documents in question potentially contain information about Epstein’s associates and activities.
Congressional Democrats have maintained pressure for document release, as Pelosi noted in her social media statement.
