OAKLAND, CA – A state parole agent was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon at a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation building in East Oakland. The incident prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement and the California Highway Patrol (CHP), which has since taken over the investigation.
The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m., with Oakland police initially responding to the scene. Officers found the wounded agent inside the building and quickly transported him to Highland Hospital in Oakland, bypassing the wait for an ambulance in a maneuver known as a “throw and go.” Despite their efforts, the agent succumbed to his injuries.
The scene remained active throughout the afternoon as CHP officers and Oakland police worked together, securing the area and gathering evidence. The CHP, which holds jurisdiction over state buildings, has now assumed control of the case.
A suspect was apprehended later that afternoon near 90th Avenue and International Boulevard in East Oakland. Witnesses reported seeing law enforcement converging on the area, though details about the arrest remain sparse.
“I saw them gathering around, moving cars aside, but we didn’t hear anything,” said a bystander who observed the police activity.
As the investigation continues, CHP officers have been meticulously documenting the crime scene, preparing their findings for the district attorney. Meanwhile, Oakland police have lifted the initial perimeter they set up, though CHP maintains a presence at the site.
The building where the shooting occurred serves as a check-in point for parolees recently released from prison. They typically report here for drug testing and meetings with their parole agents, making it a crucial link in their transition back into society.
Authorities have yet to announce whether a press conference will be held to provide further details. The situation remains fluid as both agencies continue their collaborative efforts.
