New York City Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani responded to President Donald Trump’s threat to arrest him over his pledge to push back on Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids, saying, “We will not accept this intimidation.”
Knewz.com has learned that the mayoral candidate has also referred to Trump’s comments as “an attack on our democracy.”
Trump Makes Arrest Threats

Mamdani has been the target of President Trump’s attacks ever since he stepped into the political spotlight. Trump’s threat to arrest Mamdani came as a response to Mamdani’s stance on immigration enforcement action. The NYC mayoral candidate has long maintained that he plans on keeping New York as a sanctuary city, limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. “We have to stand up and fight back… And we haven’t seen that from our current mayor, who has instead been working with the Trump administration to assist in their goal of building the single largest deportation force in American history,” he said in a statement.
Responding to his stance on the matter, the president said during a press briefing, “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him.”
Mamdani Responds to Trump’s Threat

It has been reported that Mamdani took to social media later to respond to President Trump’s threat, writing that the president had threatened to arrest him “not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.”
He added, “His statements don’t just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you… We will not accept this intimidation.”
It is worth noting in this regard that although the federal government is constitutionally charged with enforcing immigration laws, local and state government agencies are generally not required to collaborate in immigration enforcement.
Trump Claims Mamdani is a ‘Communist,’ Threatens to Cut Off Federal Funding

President Trump has also claimed that Mamdani is a “pure communist” and “a 100% Communist Lunatic,” saying, “We don’t need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”
He added, “We send him money… We send him all the things that he needs to run a government.”
Apart from name-calling, President Trump also threatened to cut off federal funding to New York City if Mamdani “doesn’t do the right thing” regarding immigration enforcement.
In a statement ot Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said, “Let’s say this: If [Mamdani] does get in, I’m going to be president, and he’s going to have to do the right thing, or they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money.”
Mamdani’s Response to Trump’s Allegations

In a statement to NBC’s Meet the Press, Mamdani denied President Trump’s allegations of being a communist, saying, “No, I am not… I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am, ultimately because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for. I’m fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower, that he has since then betrayed.”
Explaining his political stance, he said in a previous statement, “I call myself a Democrat socialist in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. King from decades ago, who said, ‘Call it democracy or call it democratic socialism. There has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country.’”
