Republican strategist Scott Jennings hinted this week that he may run for Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell’s seat in 2026 if he receives backing from former President Donald Trump. During an interview on “Real America’s Voice,” host Eric Bolling asked Jennings whether he was considering entering the race to replace McConnell. Jennings responded cautiously, saying he had not made any announcements but acknowledged knowing the other candidates and expressed confidence that the seat would remain Republican.
Jennings emphasized Trump’s influence in the race, describing politics as a team effort with the former president as “head coach.” He added that if Trump “calls a play,” they would need to follow it, making it clear he would not want to run against Trump in Kentucky. When pressed on whether he would run if Trump endorsed him, Jennings said he pays close attention to the president’s statements but did not give a direct answer.
Trump is actively searching for a trustworthy candidate to succeed McConnell, who has run for president multiple times this year. However, one front-runner, Rep. Andy Barr, has caused concern among Trump’s inner circle due to his past financial support for House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump.
Despite voting against Trump’s impeachment, Barr used his leadership PAC to fund four Republicans who joined Democrats in 2021 over the events in the Capitol on January 6. The New York Post claims that Barr has called Trump irresponsible and not blameless. Barr is up against businessman Nate Morris and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron in a three-way contest for McConnell’s seat.
After leaving the White House, Trump publicly named the 10 House Republicans who supported impeachment and urged his base to vote them out. Barr’s donations to some of these members—including Anthony Gonzalez, John Katko, David Valadao, and Jaime Herrera Beutler—have drawn scrutiny.
Loyalty to Trump has been central to his staffing and endorsement decisions, with many expecting the president’s choice to play a decisive role in the 2026 primary. Trump won Kentucky by over 30 points in 2020, reinforcing his kingmaker status in the state.
Barr’s supporters argue that he has consistently backed Trump and works to unite the GOP against the Biden administration. His spokesman noted his extensive record of donations and highlighted that Nate Morris contributed to Nikki Haley, who emerged as a primary challenger to Trump in the 2024 election.
Daniel Cameron’s loss in the 2023 Kentucky governor’s race to Democrat Andy Beshear by more than five points was also cited as a concern by Barr’s camp. The race remains closely watched as Kentucky Republicans prepare for the crucial 2026 election.
