President Donald Trump celebrated the news that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” was canceled as he weighed in on other late-night talk shows.
The president reacted to host Stephen Colbert getting “fired” from the 10-season-long show, as CBS announced it will be retiring “The Late Show” franchise in May 2026. The company claimed it was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.”
Trump was pleased with the move as Colbert has long been a vocal critic of the president and frequently uses his show’s platform to take jabs at him.
“I absolutely love that Colbert’ got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Friday.
Trump included a comment about other late-night shows, predicting that one host could soon be on the chopping block as well.
“I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!” he said, referring to the ABC late-night host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
He went on to commend Fox News host Greg Gutfeld as “better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show,” referring to NBC’s “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon.
Colbert, who took over from David Letterman in 2015, broke the news to his audience soon after he learned his fate.

“It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS,” he said. “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away. And I do want to say … that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I’m so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I’m grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night.”
Social media users weighed in after Trump’s post roasting late-night hosts.
The networks have used their late night shows as a megaphone for the politics of their boardroom, and a way to give a microphone to their liberal friends like Adam Schiff and Stacy Abrams.
