This week, President Donald Trump demanded that the case against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro be dropped.
His words clearly fell on deaf ears.
Reports broke today that Bolsonaro had indeed been arrested.
Stop the case
Trump reportedly sent a letter to the polarizing figure, publishing it on Truth Social.
In part, it stated, “I have seen the terrible treatment you are receiving at the hands of an unjust system turned against you. This should end immediately!”
Trump added, “I share your commitment to listening to the voice of the people and I am very concerned about the attacks on free speech — both in Brazil and in the United States — coming out of the current government. I have strongly voiced my disapproval both publicly and through our Tariff policy.”
The American president’s words were clearly brushed aside, as it is now being reported that the federal police in Brazil have taken Bolsonaro into custody.
His home was reportedly raided as a “precautionary measure,” and the former president has been denied access to social media as well as to any communications with his son, lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro.
After he was apprehended, it was reported that police seized nearly $14,000 from his home, which is not exactly an eye-popping amount.
He was then taken to have an ankle monitor placed on him, with a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew imposed.
The former president’s defense team stated, “The defense team for former President Jair Bolsonaro was surprised and outraged by the imposition of severe precautionary measures against him, who, to date, has always complied with all orders issued by the Judiciary.”
The lawyers added, “The defense team will issue a statement in due course, after reviewing the court’s decision.”
Breitbart reported, “Federal Police investigators cited by the outlet G1 explained that the ankle bracelet and other measures against Bolsonaro are equivalent to that of a ‘semi-open’ house arrest regime aimed at preventing a possible flight attempt.”
The outlet continued, “Bolsonaro stated during an interview with the outlet Poder 360 this week that he has no intention of leaving Brazil and ruled out the possibility of seeking political asylum in the United States like his son did in March.”
The younger Bolsonaro had requested asylum in the United States in March, citing the prosecution of his father, believing he was also being targeted by Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
