Elon Musk, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), appeared to come to President Donald Trump’s defense after claims surfaced regarding a so-called “birthday letter” allegedly sent by Trump to Jeffrey Epstein in the early 2000s.
The material in question had reportedly been sourced from older investigation documents related to Epstein and was said to feature a handwritten note attributed to Trump, accompanied by the outline of a nude woman. The signature, visibly marked “Donald,” allegedly concluded with a message wishing Epstein daily enjoyment of “wonderful secrets.”
Musk, who shared his reaction on X, appeared to cast doubt on the claim, noting that the language used did not align with Trump’s known manner of expression. Trump, through a statement on Truth Social, was said to have immediately rejected the report as defamatory and malicious. He had reportedly warned The Wall Street Journal, its parent company NewsCorp, and Chairman Emeritus Rupert Murdoch that legal action would be taken if the article was published.
Despite this, the Journal proceeded with the publication, prompting Trump to double down with further legal threats. It was noted that the president had already prevailed in legal disputes involving prominent media networks such as ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and CBS’s 60 Minutes, and now appeared prepared to pursue similar action against the Journal.
Shortly after, the president announced his intention to instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to release portions of Epstein’s criminal case files—pending court approval—while keeping the broader court record sealed. The move was presented as a response to what was described as an orchestrated media attack aimed at reviving unfounded accusations.
Although it was unclear whether the court would approve such a move, Bondi allegedly stated her plan to seek for the files by Friday, while the House categorically rejected the Wall Street Journal letter as a fake. In a forceful rebuttal to the charges, Vice President JD Vance closely mirrored President Trump’s earlier stance on the subject.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated that the document had never been shown to Trump’s team and that the outlet allegedly admitted to not being in possession of the original copy when pressed for verification. The article itself was characterized by Trump’s communications team as a “political hit piece” lacking any credible basis.
When questioned about the potential release of more Epstein-related records, Leavitt clarified that any additional disclosures would be contingent upon the emergence of new credible evidence through official Department of Justice channels.
The administration affirmed that a comprehensive internal review had already been conducted, with consensus reached among the FBI Director, Deputy FBI Director, and Attorney General regarding the findings. However, this position was revised just hours after the Journal released its story.
The report has drawn renewed attention to the shifting relationship between Trump and Rupert Murdoch, whose media empire has occasionally taken adversarial stances despite a previously favorable dynamic.
