TACOMA, WA – Kirsten Larson awoke to an unsettling scene this morning as the familiar calm of her neighborhood was shattered by the acrid scent of smoke and the piercing sound of sirens. Flames, visible from her back porch, illuminated the early hours.
Carly Capeto from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office reported that the home was occupied by six residents and two caregivers. The morning’s tragic events left one resident, a 76-year-old man, deceased. “It’s a very unfortunate event,” Capeto noted, as neighbors stood in shock, one visibly moved to tears by the loss.
The fire, believed to have started at the rear of the house, quickly engulfed the structure. “We’re looking at a total loss,” officials stated. A nearby resident, hailed as a hero, called 911 and attempted to evacuate those inside.
The devastation was swift. What once was a home is now a ruin, rendering it uninhabitable. Survivors are faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from the ashes of what was once familiar and safe.
“It’s disheartening to see this happen to such vulnerable members of our community,” commented a neighbor, reflecting on the tragedy.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by both the fire marshal and the sheriff’s office. As the community grapples with the aftermath, questions linger about the fire’s origin and the swift devastation it wrought.
While the residents mourn the loss of their home and a fellow resident, they are supported by the community’s efforts to provide aid and comfort in this difficult time.
