Vice President J.D. Vance has had to deploy his power to break Senate ties multiple times since taking office, and this week was the latest example of his Republican vote coming in clutch.
According to Breitbart, Vance cast his tie-breaking vote for a bill that would codify $9.4 billion in Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts, which was part of an effort to significantly slash government spending.
Vance was needed for the tie-breaking vote despite the Republican majority in the upper chamber, as three Republican senators voted with Democrats to block the cuts.
Not surprisingly, the three Republican senators who went against the party included, “Lisa Murkowski (AK), Susan Collins (ME) and Mitch McConnell (KY).”
What’s going on?
A major portion of the DOGE cuts included slashing funding for PBS and NPR, which has caused backlash among Democrats as the networks tended to favor that side of the aisle heavily.
The Blaze reported on the issue:
The rescissions package makes $1.1 billion in cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, including PBS and NPR, which have functionally worked as left-wing organizations subsidized by American taxpayers. The package also cuts $8.3 billion to various leftist projects disguised as foreign aid programs such as the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The Republican detractors, specifically Sen. Murkowski, argued that the cuts “undermine” congressional authority. She released a statement arguing her point.
“We’re lawmakers. We should be legislating. What we’re getting now is a direction from the White House and being told, ‘This is the priority. We want you to execute on it. We’ll be back with you with another round,’” she reportedly said. “
I don’t accept that. I’m going to be voting no.”
Her complaints ultimately didn’t matter, as other senators who originally were hold-outs were able to make deals for their states to jump on board.
Social media reacts
Users across social media reacted to the news of the Vance tie-breaking vote and the Republicans who voted with the other side.
“Collins, McConnell and Murkowski are RINOs!!!” one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, “Always the same 3 swamp monsters.”
Breitbart added:
The bill will then have to be returned to the House for final passage before being sent to President Trump’s desk. House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday urged the Senate to send it back “as is” because of the narrow Republican majority there.
