The judge who temporarily blocked the Trump administration from cutting Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood last week issued an amended restraining order July 11 in response to the administration’s request that she dissolve the original order.
CatholicVote previously reported that US District Judge Indira Talwani, appointed by former President Barack Obama, issued a restraining order July 7 that freezes a provision in President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that would have ended federal funding to abortion providers for one year. Her order came just hours after Planned Parenthood sued over the cuts.
Reuters reported that the Trump administration called her order “highly unusual” and asked her last week to dissolve the order, saying that she did not explain why she was blocking that section of the act.

Talwani said she issued the order to allow Planned Parenthood to continue functioning as usual until she can hear arguments in the case July 18. However, she issued a new order that clarifies her decision, Reuters added.
The original order had simply required the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to continue disbursing funds to Planned Parenthood. The amended order explains that Talwani believes Planned Parenthood will likely succeed on at least some of their claims that challenge the law.
According to the order, she also said the law “creates disruptions to healthcare with its implementation.” She added that the law’s provision that affiliates of Planned Parenthood will also not receive funding “burdens Planned Parenthood Members’ right to associate with each other and with Planned Parenthood Federation.”
Reuters reported that Planned Parenthood said the funding cuts could close nearly 200 locations across 24 states.
