A veteran career prosecutor and the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey has been dismissed by the U.S. Justice Department, according to the Associated Press, citing anonymous sources close to the matter. Maurene Comey has worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York since 2015 and played a leading role in the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial, as well as cases involving Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
One of the sources confirmed Comey was fired, but said no specific reason was offered.
Ongoing DOJ investigation into former officials
Last week, Fox News reported that Comey’s father, former FBI Director James Comey, and former CIA Director John Brennan were under DOJ investigation. Prosecutors launched a probe looking into whether they may have committed criminal actions while in office or afterward.
Appointed FBI Director in 2013 by former President Barack Obama, James Comey oversaw the FBI’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.
President Trump fired Comey in 2017, which led to the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian interference and potential obstruction of justice. Mueller determined there was no criminal conspiracy or collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Political tensions may have played a role
Trump’s team had a track record of removing DOJ lawyers it didn’t favor, and Maurene Comey seemed like a possible target due to her family connection and the political tension surrounding it, the Associated Press reports.
