Co-hosts of The View fired back Tuesday at former President Barack Obama and billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban over their recent critiques of the Democratic Party, arguing that voters have been active and passionate, while elected officials have failed to deliver results.
Whoopi Goldberg responded directly to Obama’s comments from a Friday fundraiser, where he urged Democrats to “toughen up” and stop “navel-gazing.”
“Let me remind everybody who’s been out on the front lines — it’s the people,” Goldberg said. “Older people were out there saying, ‘Why are you touching my Social Security?’ Parents were asking, ‘Why are you taking away rights from my child?’ This hasn’t been about Democrats being passive. This has been about poor messaging from the top.”
Obama had said, “Don’t tell me you’re a Democrat but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something.”
Goldberg pushed back, saying, “With all due respect, I think you’re pointing the finger at the wrong people. The grassroots have shown up — the problem isn’t them.”
Co-host Sara Haines agreed, clarifying that the frustration lies not with the voters but with elected officials who’ve failed to present clear policy alternatives. “Voters are very impassioned,” she said, noting the lack of a detailed Democratic plan on immigration reform. “This would be the perfect time for an elected Democrat to present a solution. Instead, there’s been silence.”
Goldberg added, “When you say Democrats, you’re lumping in voters with leaders. The people have been out, and they’ve been consistent.”
Cuban, during a recent episode of Pod Save America, also criticized the party’s messaging. “It’s just ‘Trump sucks.’ That’s the underlying theme. That’s not how you win,” Cuban said. “It should be about what’s good for the American people.”
Ana Navarro addressed Cuban’s comments bluntly. “Yeah, some of us say Donald Trump sucks. He does suck, and it feels good to say it!”
Navarro also rejected Obama’s call for Democrats to stop looking for a “messiah.” “People aren’t waiting for a savior,” she said. “They’re waiting for elected officials to step up.”
Haines agreed with Obama and Cuban in part, reiterating that leadership must do more to present practical solutions, especially on long-standing issues like immigration.
“There’s an opening here,” Haines said. “Democrats have a chance to lead, but they have to be bold and clear about what they stand for.”
