California Governor Gavin Newsom faced sharp scrutiny over his COVID-19 policies during a wide-ranging interview on The Shawn Ryan Show, where podcast host Shawn Ryan relayed a pointed question from Joe Rogan. The exchange, marked by a mix of defensiveness and self-justification, showcased the lingering controversy over Newsom’s pandemic-era leadership.

Rogan’s question—read aloud by Ryan—was direct: “Who will be held accountable for mandating COVID-19 vaccines for children, which were unnecessary and ineffective, and who will take responsibility for the unprecedented increases in myocarditis and cancer cases among them?” A follow-up asked whether Newsom felt remorse for what was described as a “draconian decision” influenced by pharmaceutical profit motives.

Newsom rejected the claim that Big Pharma influenced his administration. “We’ve passed some of the most progressive laws against Big Pharma in the United States,” he said, pointing to legislation aimed at drug pricing transparency and accountability.

He defended California’s COVID-19 strategy as aggressive but in line with national trends at the time, noting that Florida shut down businesses before California and that red states also imposed restrictions.

Then came the biggest blow of all…and it didn’t even come from Shawn Ryan.

Joe Rogan sent in a question by text, and Ryan read it out in full, leaving Newsom nowhere to run.

He acknowledged that California’s approach was “more restrictive” and asserted that decisions were made based on evolving scientific advice. “I took their advice, not as a doctor, but as a governor,” he said, adding that he has commissioned an “objective review” of the state’s COVID response. That report, he claimed, will offer a comprehensive, data-driven assessment of what policies worked—and which didn’t. Newsom said it is expected to be released next month.

Pressed on regrets, Newsom cited the closure of outdoor spaces, including beaches, as a misstep. He also attempted to reframe California’s pandemic narrative, claiming that the state has become a political scapegoat. “There’s Trump Derangement Syndrome—no question. But there’s also California Derangement Syndrome,” he said. “As if California stands uniquely guilty.”

Throughout the interview, Newsom sought to portray himself as pragmatic and responsive under unprecedented circumstances, repeatedly emphasizing “humility” and “grace.” He credited his close working relationship with President Donald Trump during the early pandemic response, stating he had “worked more closely with Trump than any other Democratic governor.”

Despite these claims, public backlash to California’s extended lockdowns, school closures, and vaccine mandates remains high, particularly among conservatives and independent voters. The interview marks a rare instance where Newsom addressed such concerns directly, suggesting he is positioning himself for broader national visibility—possibly ahead of a 2028 presidential run.
