Ghislaine Maxwell’s family released a statement addressing the potential of “government misconduct” amid Justice Department efforts to thwart an appeal.
While both sides of the political aisle jockeyed for position to score points regarding what has yet to be disclosed related to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the public continues to clamor for transparency. Adding to the mix, as Maxwell sought to have her sex trafficking conviction appealed, her family argued that she “did not receive a fair trial.”
In a statement released Tuesday, the family indicated that their relative, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence, was set to file a writ of habeas corpus contending she was unlawfully imprisoned.
“Our sister Ghislaine did not receive a fair trial,” began the release. “Her legal team continues to fight her case in the Courts and will file its reply in short order to the Government’s opposition in the US Supreme Court. If necessary, in due course, they will also file a writ of habeas corpus in the US District Court, SDNY. This allows her to challenge her imprisonment on the basis of new evidence, such as government misconduct that would have likely changed the trial’s outcome.”

Indicating that they “profoundly concur,” the family reiterated the statement from Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Marcus.
“I’d be surprised if President Trump knew his lawyers were asking the Supreme Court to let the government break a deal. He’s the ultimate dealmaker–and I’m sure he’d agree that when the United States gives its word, it should keep it,” stated the counsel. “With all the talk about who’s being prosecuted and who isn’t, it’s especially unfair that Ghislaine Maxwell remains in prison based on a promise the US government made and broke.”
As had been reported, Maxwell’s defense argued that a co-conspirator’s clause in Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement, allowing the financier to avoid federal charges as he pled guilty to state crimes, protected her from the prosecution she faced in New York. That argument was rejected by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the DOJ filed its opposition to the Supreme Court taking up the appeal.

In his most recent remarks on the matter, days after attempting to move on via a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump expressed, “I don’t understand what the interest or what the fascination is.”
“I don’t understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody,” he went on. “It’s pretty boring stuff … I think really, only pretty bad people, including fake news, want to keep something like that going.”
The president did add that he was in favor of the release of “Anything that’s credible, I would say let them have it.”

Last week, the prisoner’s brother, Ian Maxwell, spoke with The Spectator and insisted her position on the existence of a client list was, “My sister never thought there was any such thing.”
He also said, “If you prick a conspiracy the balloon goes down … people wonder why they’ve been fooled …” and, “They’ve reached the end of the road, it’s finished, for what it’s worth I think the president would be pleased they’ve concluded that.”
