A previously unseen video of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania in 2024, has surfaced nearly one year after the attack.
Crooks speaks warmly about family meals and his desire to become a better public speaker in the video, showing no indication of the deadly violence he would later carry out.
Crooks opened fire on July 13, 2024, at a Trump campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.
At the time, Trump was the presumptive Republican nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
Crooks’ bullet struck Trump in the ear and killed a bystander, Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old father of two and a former fire chief.
In the newly unearthed video, Crooks, then 18 years old, appears calm and composed.
Wearing a buttoned-up navy blue polo shirt and glasses, he introduces himself with a smile and describes his life in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
“Hello, my name is Thomas Crooks. I’m currently 18 years old and live in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania,” he says.
He continues by talking about his family and their shared traditions.
“My family consists of me, my mom and dad, my older sister, and our cat, Libby – and I don’t think there’s any better way to spend time with family than cooking meals together,” Crooks says.
“Me and my mom have cooked dinners together since I was a little kid, and on the holidays everybody helps out in the kitchen,” he adds.
“For Thanksgiving, me and my dad will cook turkey and mashed potatoes together. At Christmas, me and my mom will bake dozens of cookies together.”
Crooks ends the video with a message about personal development.
“In this course, I hope to improve my skills as a public speaker. I’ve never been particularly good at public speaking,” he said. “Until then, good luck to you all.”
The video has drawn attention due to its contrast with the violence Crooks would later commit.
The recording offers no visible warning signs or red flags that would indicate Crooks was capable of an assassination attempt against a former president.
Following the shooting, Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service snipers.
The rally had descended into chaos as gunfire erupted.
Trump, seen holding his bleeding ear, dropped to the ground as agents surrounded him.
He then stood back up, raised his clenched fist, and shouted “fight, fight, fight” before being rushed to safety in a motorcade and taken to the hospital.
Crooks had graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022.
He worked as a dietary aide at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he prepared food and assisted with care for elderly patients recovering from hospital stays.
His employer stated that Crooks passed a background check and “performed his job without concern,” per reports.
Authorities later confirmed that Crooks brought an AR-15-style rifle to the Trump rally.
The incident was described as unprecedented and drew international headlines.
Despite his actions, Crooks had no known criminal history, and investigators have not yet determined a clear motive for the attack.
His political affiliation was listed as Republican, but records also show that he donated to a group supporting President Joe Biden on Inauguration Day in 2020.
Family members and neighbors painted a picture of a quiet and private household. C
Crooks’ uncle, Mark Crooks, spoke to the Daily Mail and described the estrangement between their families.
“I haven’t seen that part of my family in years,” Mark said.
“Honestly it’s been so long I don’t think much about them. It’s a shame. The kid is like a stranger to me. They’re private and they don’t reach out to anybody any time.”
