Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) took to social media on Tuesday to push back against allegations by President Donald Trump that he is guilty of mortgage fraud for claiming that his house in Maryland is his primary residence for years even though he is supposed to live in California to be a lawmaker there.
“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason,” Schiff said. “I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot.”
Schiff was responding to a statement from Trump earlier that day that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division has evidence that Schiff committed mortgage fraud when he refinanced a home in Maryland in 2009, claiming it was his primary residence.
Schiff did not designate the property as a second home until 2020.
“Scam artist”
“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud. Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in Maryland to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must live in California because he was a congressman from California.”
The U.S. Constitution requires Congressmen to live in the state they serve. This makes sense because it’s more likely they will care about their constituents’ concerns if they do.
However, lawmakers also have a lot of business to do in Washington, D.C., so they typically have homes or at least apartments in that region as well. These are not intended to be the primary residence, however.
“Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and crooked Adam Schiff (now a senator) needs to be brought to justice,” Trump wrote.

Schiff is adamant that Trump is just retaliating against him for his leadership role in Democrats’ impeachment efforts against him (which ultimately failed).
“This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies,” Schiff said. “So, it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem.”
Trump is under fire for not releasing the Epstein files publicly, even from some members of his own party and the MAGA movement.
Still, Schiff is a known liar who could only get elected Senator because he’s a Democrat.
Here is a montage of times Schiff has provably lied:
