President Donald Trump has publicly accused California Sen. Adam Schiff (D) of involvement in a mortgage fraud scheme related to Schiff’s residency claims while serving in Congress.
The accusation is the latest development in a high-profile political feud between the two men.
On Tuesday, Trump posted a message on Truth Social calling Schiff a “scam artist” and alleging that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division had uncovered a “sustained pattern of possible mortgage fraud” involving the California senator.
Trump claimed Schiff falsely reported his Maryland residence as his primary home to secure a mortgage with more favorable terms.
According to Trump, Schiff’s mortgage paperwork was only corrected in October 2020 to reflect the property as a secondary residence.
Schiff served in the U.S. House from 2001 until winning election to the Senate in 2024, according to Trending Politics.
Trump’s allegations also draw comparisons to mortgage fraud accusations against New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Resist the Mainstream reported back in April that James was referred for criminal prosecution after federal authorities reportedly discovered discrepancies in her mortgage filings.
James has continuously denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation a “political witch hunt,” and benefits from a publicly funded legal defense fund estimated at $10 million.
In his post, Trump reiterated, “I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook,” demanding that the senator be held accountable.
Schiff has yet to issue a public statement addressing the mortgage fraud allegations.
The Trump-Schiff rivalry is among the most public and contentious political feuds in recent years.
Schiff rose to national prominence as the lead Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee during investigations into alleged collusion between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia, according to The Washington Post.
He played a key role in the first impeachment proceedings against Trump in 2019, accusing the president of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Schiff’s tenure in Congress has been marked by his vocal opposition to Trump’s policies and conduct.
He has consistently criticized the president’s handling of issues ranging from foreign policy and the coronavirus pandemic to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, during which Schiff has taken a leading role in congressional hearings.
Trump, for his part, has repeatedly attacked Schiff, labeling him a “liar” and “political hack” on social media and in public speeches.
Their ongoing conflict intensified after Schiff’s prominent role in the impeachment and and has persisted across multiple election cycles, with both figures continuing to exchange public accusations
The recent mortgage fraud claim comes amid Trump’s growing influence over federal agencies, including the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
FHFA Director William Pulte has reportedly supported Trump’s efforts to investigate alleged wrongdoing by political opponents.
This has sparked criticism and concern among observers worried about the politicization of federal institutions traditionally viewed as impartial regulators, according to TP.
As of now, neither Fannie Mae nor federal prosecutors have publicly confirmed the mortgage fraud allegations against Schiff. The senator’s office has declined to comment on the situation.
