There’s one really simple step to save taxpayer money that anyone could have done for years but nobody did until now. President Donald Trump angers Democrats seven days a week, even on his way to the Superbowl. When pennies cost more to make than they’re worth, why are we still making them? That’s what a real president demands to know. We won’t be making them any longer. Nickles might be phased out next.
Throwing money away
The United States Treasury has literally been throwing money away as fast as they mint it. President Trump posted on social media that he’s issued another directive.
This one infuriates Democrats by halting the production of pennies. They’re a total waste of taxpayer funds.
“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. When you add in distribution they cost 3.7 cents each. Saving money starts with the pennies.
“Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.” You can expect Democrats to be filing suit to block the move on Monday.
While Joe Biden was busy avoiding subpoenas and covering up alleged crimes of his family members, the U.S. Mint told him that it was costing them 3.69 cents to produce a single penny.
That, they explained, slowly and patiently, results in “in a loss of $85.3 million” in real money during “fiscal year 2024 alone.” They were churning out nearly 3.2 billion pennies a year at a steady loss. Joe’s only response was to ask if there was any more Cherry Garcia left in the freezer.
Authority of Congress
The idea of saving taxpayer money disturbs Democrats. If Trump does it, then it has to be bad, they insist. They have teams of lawyers standing by to file injunctions against every executive decision Trump makes.
They’re opposing this one on the theory that it would take an act of Congress. That’s not going to stand up in court.
Angry progressives don’t want to take the word of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Democrat lawyers are suggesting that “an act of Congress may be required to formally end penny production.” They’ll be filing paperwork to that effect as soon as the courthouse opens. When you add in distribution they cost 3.7 cents each.

That’s their own way of minting money. Beltway law firms mine tons of gold from disgruntled liberals. The best part for them is that they get paid whether they win or lose.
Republicans say go ahead and file your complaints. They believe Secretary Bessent can halt penny production with only his say so. Yes, Congress created the Treasury and he’s allowed to run it as he sees fit.
If Democrats want to waste Alex Soros’ money filing frivolous lawsuits, go right ahead. The voters see them fighting Trump’s efforts to save them some cash and wonder why they keep voting for the blue team.
