Eric Lee, a lawyer defending the family of the Boulder, Colorado firebomber in their deportation proceedings, has a history of representing clients linked to extreme anti-Israel activism and controversial causes, the Washington Free Beacon reports. The case centers on the family of Mohammed Soliman, an Egyptian national who attacked a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder using Molotov cocktails and a homemade flamethrower, resulting in injuries and the death of an 82-year-old woman. After Soliman’s arrest, authorities discovered that his wife, Hayam El Gamal, and their five children were also in the U.S. illegally, leading to their detention by ICE and the initiation of deportation proceedings.
Lee, along with three other lawyers, argued that deporting the family was “reminiscent of Nazi Germany,” but a federal judge recently ruled that the deportation case could proceed and that the family would remain in detention. This case is one of several high-profile and controversial matters Lee has taken on.
His previous clients include: Helyeh Doutaghi, a Yale Law School research scholar suspended for her involvement with Samidoun, a group sanctioned by the U.S. as a front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a designated terrorist organization. Doutaghi was reportedly involved in events and panels with other sanctioned individuals and traveled on behalf of Samidoun; Rasha Alawieh, a Brown University professor deported after attending the funeral of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah; Prahlad Iyengar, an MIT student suspended after publishing an article advocating violence in the anti-Israel movement and distributing PFLP flyers; Momodou Taal, a Cornell student who had his visa revoked after calling for the destruction of the U.S. and celebrating Hamas’s October 7 attacks. Lee represented Taal in both a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s executive order targeting pro-Hamas visa holders and in deportation proceedings—Taal ultimately self-deported after losing in court.
Beyond his legal work, Lee has been active in left-wing and anti-Israel activism, speaking at events for the Socialist Equality Party in London and sharing social media posts supporting militant resistance against the U.S. and its allies. He has called for Americans to “forcefully” oppose Trump-era immigration policies and has been critical of both major parties for their handling of immigration issues.
Lee’s advocacy for immigrants is longstanding; he previously won an award for his work on a 2024 Supreme Court case, despite losing the case. He has argued that only mass mobilization and coordinated action can protect immigrants from what he describes as increasingly authoritarian government policies.
According to the Free Beacon, “Lee has long defended immigrants, even winning an award for his involvement in a 2024 Supreme Court case that he lost. He’s also been highly critical of both parties on immigration, accusing them of abandoning ‘their responsibility of upholding democratic rights.’ During the June 2024 presidential debate, Lee accused then-president Joe Biden of failing to push back against President Donald Trump “using Hitler’s talking points on immigration.” A month before the November election, he said the Biden-Harris administration was pandering to Trump by considering changes that would make it harder to lift asylum restrictions.”
