FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino returned to the office on Monday following an unexpected absence that stirred speculation about internal turmoil within the Trump administration.
Bongino’s failure to appear for work on Friday sparked widespread rumors about his possible resignation and raised questions about the administration’s handling of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
Those concerns were addressed publicly by President Donald Trump on Sunday evening as he stepped off Air Force One.
Trump affirmed his continued support for Bongino, describing him as a longtime acquaintance and trusted figure within the administration.
“I spoke to him today,” Trump told reporters.
“Dan Bongino. Very good guy. I’ve known him for a long time. I’ve done his show many, many times. He sounded terrific, actually. No, I think he’s in good shape.”
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and conservative commentator, gained national prominence in right-leaning media circles for his focus on allegations of a government cover-up protecting high-profile individuals connected to Epstein.
Since joining the FBI as deputy director, Bongino has publicly upheld the conclusion that Epstein’s death in 2019 was a suicide and that the agency is not in possession of a “client list” of individuals who may have been involved in Epstein’s crimes.
The investigation into Epstein’s activities has continued to stir controversy years after his death in a Manhattan jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on federal charges related to the trafficking and sexual abuse of underage girls.
Epstein’s high-level associations, including with business, academic and political elites, have drawn sustained public interest and fueled widespread calls for greater transparency.
Recent internal conflict among senior officials intensified the scrutiny.
On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly confronted Bongino directly, accusing him of leaking sensitive information to conservative news outlets.
Bongino denied the allegation. The following day, he did not appear at FBI headquarters, prompting immediate speculation about a potential departure.
The White House moved quickly to downplay rumors of a rift.
“President Trump has assembled a highly qualified and experienced law and order team dedicated to protecting Americans, holding criminals accountable, and delivering justice to victims,” White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement to The Independent. “This work is being carried out seamlessly and with unity. Any attempt to sow division within this team is baseless and distracts from the real progress being made in restoring public safety and pursuing justice for all.”
Trump officials continue to maintain that no complete client list is in the government’s possession.
They have asserted that releasing certain records could potentially expose individuals who were not directly involved in any criminal activity but may have crossed paths with Epstein socially or professionally, including those listed in his private jet logs.
Despite persistent claims from critics and theorists, the Trump administration has rejected the idea that it is shielding high-profile figures from public accountability.
Trump himself has previously denied knowledge of any such list and has expressed frustration over the continued speculation.
Over the weekend, Bondi made a high-profile public appearance at Trump’s side during the FIFA Club World Cup held in New Jersey.
The appearance was seen as a public reaffirmation of Trump’s confidence in her.
This followed a social media post on Saturday where Trump defended Bondi from supporters who had criticized her for suggesting she had possession of the alleged Epstein client list.
“She’s doing a fantastic job,” Trump posted.
That post prompted a sharp rebuke from Elon Musk, who has frequently criticized the government’s handling of the Epstein case.
“This is in the running for worst post ever made,” one outraged X user said, prompting Musk to respond by saying, “Seriously.”
The billionaire continued, “He said ‘Epstein’ half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein.”
“Just release the files as promised,” Musk added.
Meanwhile, new developments continue to emerge in the Epstein saga.
A source close to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate and convicted accomplice, indicated that Maxwell is willing to testify before Congress.
The source claimed she is prepared to “reveal the truth” as she appeals her 20-year prison sentence.
