Canadian musician’s willingness to risk his “future US career” by canceling tour over politics hit with reality check about shows “sandwiched between trivia night and a cover band.”
In spite of the critics, President Donald Trump’s tariffs recently surpassed a record with $113 billion in revenue collected for the fiscal year. Amid the economic success, Canada had announced the end of its digital services tax (DST), which proved one of a number of final straws to inspire singer-songwriter Matthew Good to abandon stateside shows few were aware were happening.
“To my US fans, and friends. I’ve come to the personal decision, that I can’t, in good conscience carry out my dates this summer in your country,” Good began a lengthy Facebook post. “This is not fair to you, and I’m very well aware of that, but the truth is, every week that goes by, I have a deeper disdain for what’s going on their politically.”
“It’s MY opinion, and I’m willing to risk my future US career, to stand up against things today, and god willing, for ONLY another 3 years,” he added as he made clear his issues were with the current administration.
Among the musician’s grievances, he specifically called out the DST that Canada’s finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, had revoked “in anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade agreement” that otherwise would have required U.S. tech companies to pay a 3% rate on Canadian revenue over $20 million.
Of course, while he also made note of an increase in visa costs and claimed there was a chance he and his band “may still be denied entry if we have something negative to say about the current GOP,” the entertainer did express a modicum of self-awareness in acknowledging how little his political self-flagellation would impact the cause he was purportedly standing for.
“I realize that I have approximately .00001% impact on things overall, as this was just a few thousand tickets, but I can’t stand by and be quiet while our amazing country is bullied into walking away from billions in needed revenue, constantly left wondering if we actually have a partner or an enemy to the south, and equally as tragic, supporting someone who has completely bastardized the institution of art and culture in the US,” asserted Good.
Preemptively recognizing the limited reach the protest would have, while arguably proving an overall benefit to the artist in gaining support from fellow Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferers, wasn’t enough to prevent the mockery from rolling in.
Amid shots from both sides of the border of people pointing out they’d never heard of the musician, others suggested the cancelation was motivated by a lack of ticket sales while one social media user went as far as to point out, “One was a 400 seat brew pub. His date was sandwiched between trivia night and a cover band. He wasn’t doing a Las Vegas residency.”

You need to be an artist/entertainer to qualify for an artist/entertainer visa to come to the US on tour.

He has some pretty big hits in the mid to late 90’s in Canada. His music is pretty high quality but his politics are garbage.
