Efforts to close the door on Jeffrey Epstein found social media galvanized in opposition as the president assured FBI Director Dan Bongino was in “good shape” despite a reported ultimatum.
The passage of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act and a celebration of America’s birthday rapidly became old news when, two days later, a memo was released announcing the Justice Department and FBI had no “incriminating ‘client list’” from the late convicted sex offender.
Now, amid reports that Bongino is threatening to resign if Attorney General Pam Bondi isn’t terminated, the president continued to receive pushback for attempting to move on, including from the world’s richest man, once a tremendous ally for the second administration.
“This is a very big deal,” wrote Elon Musk late Saturday. “What the hell kind of system are we living in if thousands of kids were abused, the government has videos of the abusers and yet none of the abusers are even facing charges!?”
This is a very big deal.
What the hell kind of system are we living in if thousands of kids were abused, the government has videos of the abusers and yet none of the abusers are even facing charges!?

The tech entrepreneur also posted in direct response to Trump, “Seriously. He said ‘Epstein’ half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein. Just release the files as promised.”
Musk replied to an account sharing the president’s Truth Social post that questioned, “What’s going on with my ‘boys’ and, in some cases, ‘gals?’ They’re all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We’re on one Team, MAGA, and I don’t like what’s happening. We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.”
Seriously.
He said “Epstein” half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein.
Just release the files as promised.

Further in the post, the chief executive accused leaders from the Democratic Party like former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “the Losers and Criminals of the Biden Administration,” as well as former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan of creating the “Epstein Files” like the Steele Dossier. He also challenged, “If there was ANYTHING in there that could have hurt the MAGA Movement, why didn’t the use it?”
As with Musk, that argument didn’t fly with the president’s ardent supporters as comments under the post on his own platform continued to demand answers on behalf of the victims. Likewise, myriad conservative voices used their tremendous reach to challenge the shifting narrative.
SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly, who has already made the “obvious” case in support of Bongino over Bondi, posted, “There are really only two options: 1. There’s no huge undisclosed there there on Epstein, Bondi misled on it (until she didn’t) & Trump is quick to forgive a loyal soldier for being desperate to get on TV; or 2. There is a scandal that’s being covered up & it’s at his direction.”
In response, country music star John Rich brought up Epstein’s ex-girlfriend, currently serving a 240-month prison sentence for conspiring with the financier to sexually abuse minors, and said, “If there’s no ‘there, there’ then why is Ghislane in prison for 20 years?”
If there’s no “there, there” then why is Ghislane in prison for 20 years?

President Trump is getting roasted in the comments on his Epstein post on Truth Social, which is VERY unusual.
This is not going away… pic.twitter.com/dyhepWYZyp

Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes are not a historical footnote—they are a mirror held up to America’s institutions. Over 250 survivors deserve more than silence or spin. Your administration’s February release made one thing clear: the pursuit of justice can’t be treated as a partisan…

Additionally, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn reacted to a report that syndicated radio host Glenn Beck had filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain Bongino’s communications with Bondi about Epstein, attempting to warn the president, “the EPSTEIN AFFAIR is not going away,” as, “TRUST was deeply violated by both @JoeBiden and @BarackObama that your administration MUST be above reproach.”
.@realDonaldTrump please understand the EPSTEIN AFFAIR is not going away.
If the administration doesn’t address the massive number of unanswered questions about Epstein, especially the ABUSE OF CHILDREN BY ELITES (it is very clear that abuse occurred), then moving forward on… https://t.co/z7bMAf7jzP

Regarding the current status of Bongino, the president returned to Washington, D.C. after attending the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey Sunday and was asked on the tarmac outside Air Force One if the conservative mainstay was still with the FBI and whether they’d spoken.
“Oh, I think so,” Trump said of the first matter before replying to the second question, “I did, I spoke to him today. Dan Bongino, very good guy. I’ve known him for a long time. I’ve done his show many, many times. He sounded terrific, actually. No, I think he’s in good shape.”

In addition to the furor on the right over the shifting narrative, detractors of the president have also seized on the story to advance concerns over trust with that administration.
Writing for Mediaite, founding Editor Colby Hall opined in part, “Let’s be clear: Trump isn’t just distancing himself from Epstein. He’s suggesting that Epstein is being used against him, as a political cudgel by the very people his base believes Epstein worked with.”
“Trump wants to keep the Epstein files as a conspiracy theory — about the left — while insisting it’s a DEAD issue otherwise? Huh. He’s retrofitting the conspiracy theory, which is a neat trick if you can pull it off, but it doesn’t look likely he can,” continued Hall. “It’s a funhouse of mirrors, competing conspiracies, designed not just to confuse and bewilder, but to undermine what people see with their own eyes — and therefore trust.”
Contending that Trump “wants to control which narratives get traction and which get buried,” the editor further suggested, “But MAGA, like any populist movement, no longer belongs to its creator. Just like the Frankenstein metaphor, the monster Trump created is now terrorizing his own village. If you spend years teaching your supporters to see hidden hands behind every curtain, don’t be surprised when they look behind your curtain too.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that allies of Bondi in the Trump administration were ecstatic over the president’s outspoken support of her over the weekend and “believe [Bongino] has burned his bridges and needs to leave, according to two people familiar with her thinking.”
